Coloplast Assura® Paediatric 2110 is a one-piece drainable ostomy pouch specifically designed for paediatric stoma care, with a compact pouch profile, opaque soft covering and an adjustable 10–35mm cut-to-fit opening.

The adhesive skin barrier and pouch are permanently joined to form a complete one-piece appliance. When the pouch is changed, the entire appliance is removed and replaced.

Assura® uses Coloplast's distinctive spiral adhesive system, combining adhesive and moisture-absorbing materials in a spiral structure to help provide secure attachment while protecting the delicate skin surrounding the stoma.

The pouch also incorporates an integrated filter, soft covering on both the front and back and a self-adhesive soft closing clip for securing the drainable outlet.

Paediatric design

Assura® 2110 is specifically designed for children with a stoma.

Paediatric ostomy appliances need to accommodate smaller abdominal areas and smaller stoma dimensions than conventional adult appliances.

The compact pouch and smaller adhesive area help provide a more proportionate fit for paediatric users while retaining the essential functions of an adult drainable ostomy appliance.

Stoma appliances for children should be selected and monitored with the involvement of an appropriately experienced Paediatric or Stoma Care Nurse.

One-piece system

Assura® 2110 is a one-piece appliance.

The pouch and adhesive skin barrier are permanently attached to each other.

When changing the appliance:

• The complete pouch and adhesive are removed together

• A new complete appliance is applied

• There is no separate mechanical coupling or detachable baseplate

A one-piece system provides a relatively simple and low-profile appliance without a separate pouch-to-baseplate connection.

Cut-to-fit 10–35mm opening

Reference 2110 has a starter opening that can be cut to fit stomas from approximately 10mm up to 35mm.

This allows the adhesive opening to be adapted to the individual child's stoma rather than relying on one fixed pre-cut diameter.

The stoma should be measured carefully before cutting.

The finished opening should fit closely around the stoma without touching, rubbing or constricting it.

Too large an opening can expose the surrounding skin to stoma output.

This is particularly important with ileostomy output, which contains digestive enzymes and can cause rapid irritation when it remains in contact with exposed skin.

Choosing the correct opening size:

Measure the stoma using an appropriate stoma measuring guide.

Trace the required size and shape onto the adhesive cutting guide.

Cut the opening carefully.

Do not cut beyond the manufacturer's stated 35mm maximum.

Check the finished opening before removing the protective backing.

The opening should:

• Fit closely around the stoma

• Avoid constricting the stoma

• Minimise exposed skin

• Follow the actual shape of the stoma where necessary

A child's stoma size may change, particularly following surgery or as the child grows.

The stoma should therefore be remeasured regularly rather than assuming that the previous cutting size remains correct.

Assura® spiral adhesive

Assura® uses Coloplast's spiral adhesive system.

Different adhesive materials are arranged in a spiral structure to combine two important functions:

• Secure adhesion

• Absorption of moisture from the skin

The moisture-absorbing component helps maintain an appropriate environment around the stoma, while the adhesive component helps keep the appliance securely attached.

This is particularly important with one-piece appliances because the adhesive is removed whenever the complete pouch is changed.

Gentle removal and correct sizing help reduce unnecessary trauma to paediatric peristomal skin.

Integrated filter

Assura® 2110 incorporates an integrated filter.

Gas naturally produced by the bowel may accumulate inside the pouch.

The filter is designed to allow gas to escape gradually while helping control odour.

This can help:

• Reduce pouch ballooning

• Reduce accumulation of gas

• Maintain a flatter pouch profile

• Improve discretion

• Manage odour from filtered gas

Do not puncture, cut or otherwise alter the filter.

Opaque Soft Cover

Reference 2110 is the opaque version.

The pouch incorporates a soft covering on both the front and back.

The soft covering helps:

• Conceal the pouch contents

• Provide a softer surface against the skin

• Improve comfort

• Reduce noise from the pouch film

• Improve discretion beneath clothing

The underlying pouch film is designed to be odour-proof.

For users requiring visibility of the stoma and pouch contents, the equivalent clear paediatric version is Assura® 2115.

Drainable pouch

Assura® 2110 is a drainable pouch, making it suitable for liquid or semi-liquid stoma output.

Rather than replacing the complete pouch every time it fills, the contents can be emptied through the outlet several times during normal wear.

The pouch should generally be emptied before it becomes excessively full or heavy.

Regular emptying helps:

• Reduce weight pulling on the adhesive

• Improve comfort

• Maintain discretion

• Reduce stress on the pouch and skin barrier

• Reduce the likelihood of leakage associated with an overfilled pouch

Self-adhesive closing clip

The drainage outlet is secured using Coloplast's self-adhesive soft closing clip.

This is different from the Hide-Away outlet used on newer Assura Inspire® products.

The soft clip is supplied for closing the outlet securely after emptying.

The closure is designed to be:

• Secure

• Straightforward to operate

• Easy to clean

• Soft and comfortable against the body

Always check that the outlet has been completely closed before repositioning the pouch.

Directions:

Wash and dry your hands.

Measure the stoma carefully.

Cut the adhesive opening to the required size within the 10–35mm range.

Check that the drainage outlet is securely closed with the supplied closing system.

Gently remove the existing appliance according to the child's established stoma-care routine.

Clean the skin around the stoma according to advice from the Stoma Care Nurse.

Ensure the surrounding skin is appropriately clean and dry.

Remove the protective backing from the Assura® adhesive.

Centre the opening carefully over the stoma.

Apply the adhesive gently around the stoma.

Smooth the barrier outward to achieve complete contact with the surrounding skin.

Check for:

• Gaps

• Creases

• Folds

• Areas where the adhesive has not made full contact

Apply gentle hand pressure over the adhesive to help establish a secure seal.

Emptying the pouch:

Empty the pouch before it becomes excessively full.

Position the outlet over a toilet or appropriate receptacle.

Release the soft closing clip according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Open the drainable outlet.

Allow the pouch contents to drain.

Clean the outlet carefully as required.

Refold the outlet correctly.

Secure it using the closing clip.

Check that the outlet is fully closed before replacing clothing.

Changing the appliance:

Change the complete appliance according to the child's established stoma-care routine and the manufacturer's instructions.

Remove the adhesive slowly and gently, supporting the skin as the appliance is peeled away.

Avoid pulling the pouch rapidly away from delicate paediatric skin.

Examine the skin around the stoma at every appliance change.

Look for:

• Redness

• Soreness

• Moisture damage

• Broken skin

• Signs of leakage beneath the adhesive

• Pressure or rubbing

Persistent skin changes should be assessed by a Stoma Care Nurse or appropriate paediatric healthcare professional.
