Meningococcal B (MenB) infection is a rare but serious bacterial infection that can cause meningitis (infection of the lining of the brain and spinal cord) and septicaemia (blood poisoning). The disease can develop rapidly and may be life-threatening.

Who should consider MenB vaccination?

The MenB vaccine may be suitable for:

  • Teenagers and young adults
  • University students living in shared accommodation
  • Individuals with certain medical conditions that increase the risk of meningococcal disease

Which vaccine is used?

We provide the MenB vaccine:

Bexsero® - Manufactured by GSK.

How many doses are needed?

The number of doses depends on age at vaccination:

Infants

A schedule of multiple doses is required according to current recommendations.

Children aged 1 year and over

Usually 2 doses given at least 8 weeks apart.

Adults

Usually 2 doses given at least 1 month apart.

Your pharmacist will confirm the appropriate schedule during your consultation.

What are the symptoms of meningococcal disease?

Symptoms may include:

  • Fever
  • Severe headache
  • Neck stiffness
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Vomiting
  • Drowsiness
  • Confusion
  • A rash that does not fade when pressed

Urgent medical attention should always be sought if meningococcal disease is suspected.

How effective is the vaccine?

The MenB vaccine provides protection against many strains of meningococcal group B bacteria and significantly reduces the risk of severe disease.

Who should not receive the vaccine?

The vaccine may not be suitable if:

  • You have previously had a severe allergic reaction to a MenB vaccine or any of its ingredients.
  • You are currently unwell with a high temperature.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding and require individual assessment.

Common side effects

Common side effects include:

  • Pain, redness or swelling at the injection site
  • Mild fever
  • Headache
  • Muscle aches
  • Tiredness
  • Irritability in young children

These side effects are usually mild and short-lived.
