Coloplast SenSura® Mio Concave 1-Piece Drainable Pouches are one-piece drainable ileostomy appliances specifically designed for outward body profiles such as curves, bulges and parastomal hernias.

Unlike a conventional flat or convex appliance, SenSura® Mio Concave incorporates a distinctive curved, star-shaped baseplate designed to fit securely over rounded or outward-projecting areas around the stoma. The individual adhesive petals are designed to hug the body contour while helping reduce unwanted creasing and folding.

A built-in stability ring supports the central area around the stoma, while flexible fit zones and Coloplast's BodyFit Technology® elastic adhesive allow the surrounding baseplate to adapt to movement and changes in body position.

The drainable pouch is particularly suitable for ileostomy and other stomas producing liquid or semi-liquid output, as it can be emptied repeatedly without removing the appliance.

What is SenSura® Mio Concave?

SenSura® Mio Concave is specifically designed for an outward body profile around the stoma.

A conventional flat adhesive can have difficulty following a pronounced outward curve. It may crease, bridge across areas of skin or lift around its edges.

SenSura® Mio Concave instead uses a curved baseplate designed to wrap around the outward shape.

Typical outward profiles include:

• Bulges around the stoma

Its design is intended to provide closer contact between the adhesive and these curved surfaces.

Concave versus Convex

Concave and convex appliances address fundamentally different body profiles.

Concave

Designed primarily for an outward profile, including:

The baseplate is shaped to wrap around the outward-projecting area.

Convex

Designed primarily for an inward profile or a stoma requiring additional support to protrude.

Star-shaped baseplate

One of the defining features of SenSura® Mio Concave is its star-shaped adhesive baseplate.

The outer adhesive is divided into petal-like sections.

When applied over an outward curve, these petals are designed to:

SenSura® Mio Concave is a one-piece appliance.

When the appliance eventually requires changing, the complete pouch and baseplate are removed and replaced together.

Drainable / open pouch

This version of SenSura® Mio Concave is open and drainable.

The pouch can be:

Full-circle pre-filter

SenSura® Mio Concave incorporates Coloplast's full-circle pre-filter.

Intestinal gas can collect within an ileostomy pouch and cause the pouch to inflate or balloon.

The full-circle pre-filter is designed to:

Pre-cut products may provide greater convenience where the stoma has reached a stable size and closely matches one of the available openings.

Choosing the correct opening

Measure the stoma using an appropriate stoma measuring guide.

The finished opening should:

• Fit closely around the stoma

• Avoid rubbing against it

• Avoid constricting it

• Minimise exposed peristomal skin

• Follow the actual shape of the stoma where required

This is particularly important with ileostomy output because prolonged contact between digestive output and exposed skin can cause irritation.

An opening that is too large may allow output to reach the skin.

An opening that is too small may rub against or constrict the stoma.

Body profile is as important as stoma size

Correct opening size alone does not guarantee an appropriate appliance fit.

SenSura® Mio Concave is specifically intended for an outward body profile, so appliance selection should also consider:

• Shape of the abdomen

• Presence of a bulge

• Presence of a parastomal hernia

• Depth and shape of the outward curve

• Position of the stoma on the curve

• Changes in abdominal shape during movement

• Previous leakage

• Peristomal skin condition

Where possible, the body profile should be assessed in different positions because the shape of a bulge or hernia can change significantly between standing, sitting and lying down.

Applying SenSura® Mio Concave:

Wash and dry your hands.

Measure the stoma where required.

Select the appropriate pouch size and opening.

Prepare the opening according to the manufacturer's cutting guide if using a cut-to-fit appliance.

Ensure the drainage outlet is securely closed.

Gently remove the existing appliance while supporting the surrounding skin.

Clean the peristomal skin according to the normal stoma-care routine.

Ensure the skin is appropriately clean and dry.

Remove the protective backing from the adhesive.

Centre the opening carefully over the stoma.

Apply pressure around the stability ring to establish secure contact around the stoma.

Smooth the star-shaped adhesive petals outward over the curved abdominal profile.

Ensure that the petals follow the body contour.

Check for:

• Gaps

• Folds

• Creases

• Lifted adhesive

• Areas where the adhesive bridges over rather than contacts the skin

Apply gentle hand pressure to help establish an effective seal.

Always follow Coloplast's specific application instructions supplied with the appliance.

Emptying the pouch:

Empty the pouch before it becomes excessively full or heavy.

Position the outlet over a toilet or appropriate receptacle.

Open the drainage outlet according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Allow the pouch contents to drain.

Clean the end of the outlet as required.

Securely close the outlet.

Check that it is completely closed before repositioning clothing.

Regular emptying helps reduce weight and tension on the Concave adhesive system.

Changing the appliance:

Because SenSura® Mio Concave is a one-piece appliance, the complete pouch and adhesive baseplate are removed together when a full appliance change is required.

Wash and dry your hands.

Gently lift an edge of the adhesive.

Support the surrounding skin while slowly peeling the appliance away.

Avoid rapidly pulling the adhesive from the skin.

Dispose of the used appliance appropriately.

Clean and inspect the peristomal skin before applying a replacement pouch.

Parastomal hernias and bulges

SenSura® Mio Concave is specifically designed to fit outward curves, including those associated with parastomal hernias.

However, the appliance does not treat the underlying hernia.

Changes in:

• Hernia size

• Shape of the abdomen

• Stoma size

• Stoma function

• Appliance fit

• Frequency of leakage

may mean that the appliance needs reassessment.

A rapidly enlarging bulge, severe pain, persistent vomiting, marked stoma changes or unexpected reduction or cessation of output with symptoms suggesting obstruction requires appropriate clinical assessment.
