Variants

Coloplast SenSura® Mio Convex Deep 1-Piece Closed Pouches are one-piece convex colostomy appliances designed for stomas with an opening below skin level that require substantial support to protrude into the pouch.

The Deep Convex baseplate provides stronger convex support than SenSura® Mio Convex Soft or Convex Light and is particularly suitable for retracted or deep-set stomas and deep-seated peristomal areas where a pronounced curve is required to achieve secure contact.

SenSura® Mio Convex Deep combines BodyFit Technology®, integrated flexlines and a full-circle filter with a soft textile covering designed for comfort and discretion.

The pouch and convex adhesive baseplate are permanently joined to form a complete one-piece closed appliance. When the pouch requires changing, the entire appliance is removed and replaced.

What is Deep Convex?

SenSura® Mio Convex Deep provides the strongest convex profile within the standard SenSura® Mio Convex Soft, Light and Deep range.

Convexity applies controlled pressure around the stoma to help encourage it to protrude more effectively into the pouch and improve the seal between the appliance and surrounding skin.

Coloplast describes Deep Convex as designed for stomas with an opening below skin level that require a lot of help to protrude, as well as deep-seated areas where a deeper curve is required to obtain good contact.

Deep Convex may therefore be appropriate for:

  • Retracted stomas

  • Stomas below skin level

  • Deep peristomal dips

  • Pronounced inward abdominal contours

  • Situations where lighter convexity does not provide sufficient support

Convex appliances should be selected following an appropriate stoma assessment, particularly where Deep Convex has not previously been used.

Soft, Light or Deep Convex?

SenSura® Mio Convex is available in different convex profiles.

Convex Soft

Provides gentle convex support and is designed for stomas that protrude above skin level but require additional support because of surrounding body contours.

Convex Light

Provides moderate convex support for stomas approximately level with the skin or situated within a dipped area.

Convex Deep

Provides stronger convex support for stomas below skin level or deep-seated areas requiring a more pronounced curve.

The correct degree of convexity depends on both the stoma and the surrounding abdominal profile.

Using stronger convexity than necessary may create unnecessary pressure, while insufficient convexity may fail to provide an adequate seal.

Integrated flexlines

SenSura® Mio Convex incorporates integrated flexlines within the convex baseplate.

The flexlines are designed to combine:

  • Stability immediately around the stoma

  • Convex pressure where support is required

  • Flexibility further away from the stoma

  • Comfortable movement with the abdomen

  • Secure skin contact during normal activity

This allows the convex baseplate to provide structural support without making the entire appliance rigid.

BodyFit Technology®

SenSura® Mio incorporates an elastic adhesive featuring BodyFit Technology®.

The adhesive is designed to stretch and move with the body rather than behaving like a rigid flat surface.

This allows the appliance to adapt during:

  • Sitting

  • Walking

  • Bending

  • Changes in posture

  • Normal abdominal movement

Maintaining close contact between the adhesive and skin can help reduce gaps where stoma output could reach the peristomal skin.

Closed pouch

SenSura® Mio Convex Deep 1-piece closed is a closed colostomy pouch.

It does not have a drainage outlet.

When the pouch contains sufficient output to require changing, the complete one-piece appliance is removed and replaced.

Closed pouches are generally most appropriate where output is:

  • Formed

  • Semi-formed

  • Relatively predictable

  • Produced at manageable intervals

They are therefore primarily intended for colostomy.

For frequent liquid or semi-liquid output, a drainable pouch will generally be more practical.

Full-circle filter

SenSura® Mio incorporates Coloplast's full-circle filter.

Gas produced by the bowel can accumulate inside a closed pouch and cause ballooning.

The full-circle filter is designed to:

  • Allow gas to leave the pouch gradually

  • Help reduce pouch ballooning

  • Filter odour before gas is released

  • Help maintain a flatter pouch profile

  • Improve discretion during wear

Coloplast reports that its full-circle filter significantly reduces incidents of ballooning compared with conventional filter designs.

Do not puncture, cut or otherwise modify the filter.

Textile woven cover

SenSura® Mio uses a soft textile woven pouch covering designed to look and feel more like clothing fabric than conventional medical pouch material.

The covering is designed to be:

  • Soft against the skin

  • Comfortable during everyday wear

  • Discreet beneath clothing

  • Water-repellent

  • Suitable for showering

Neutral Grey and Black options are available within the current UK range.

Midi or Maxi?

Midi

Midi provides a more compact pouch profile.

Neutral Grey options are available with:

  • 10–23mm

  • 15–33mm

  • 31–43mm

Black Midi options are currently available with:

  • 10–23mm

  • 15–33mm

Maxi

Maxi provides greater collection capacity.

Neutral Grey options are available with:

  • 10–23mm

  • 15–33mm

  • 31–43mm

  • 10–43mm

Black Maxi options are available with:

  • 10–23mm

  • 15–33mm

  • 31–43mm

  • 10–43mm

The appropriate pouch size depends on output volume, frequency of pouch changes, clothing, lifestyle and personal preference.

Choosing the correct opening range

The current UK Deep Convex closed range uses cut-to-fit / starter-hole openings.

Available ranges include:

  • 10–23mm

  • 15–33mm

  • 31–43mm

  • 10–43mm

Select an appliance whose cutting range accommodates the measured stoma.

The finished opening should:

  • Fit closely around the stoma

  • Avoid rubbing against the stoma

  • Avoid constricting it

  • Minimise exposed peristomal skin

  • Follow the actual shape of the stoma where necessary

Do not cut beyond the stated opening range for the selected appliance.

Opening size and convexity are separate

The correct opening size does not automatically mean that the selected convexity is appropriate.

Both should be assessed independently.

Factors affecting convexity selection include:

  • How far the stoma protrudes

  • Whether the stoma is above, level with or below skin level

  • Depth of the peristomal area

  • Abdominal folds or creases

  • Skin condition

  • Previous leakage

  • Pressure tolerance

  • Individual body profile

Persistent leakage despite an appropriately sized opening may indicate that appliance fit or convexity requires reassessment.

Directions:

Wash and dry your hands.

Measure the stoma carefully.

Select a Deep Convex appliance with an appropriate cutting range.

Prepare the adhesive opening according to the measured stoma size and manufacturer's cutting guide.

Gently remove the existing appliance while supporting the surrounding skin.

Clean the skin around the stoma according to the normal stoma-care routine.

Ensure the peristomal skin is appropriately clean and dry.

Remove the protective backing from the adhesive.

Centre the prepared opening carefully over the stoma.

Apply the Deep Convex baseplate around the stoma.

Press gently but firmly to establish contact.

Smooth the adhesive outward.

Check the complete adhesive area for:

  • Gaps

  • Folds

  • Creases

  • Areas without secure skin contact

Apply gentle hand pressure around the appliance to help establish a secure seal.

Changing the pouch:

Because this is a one-piece closed appliance, the complete pouch and convex baseplate are removed together.

Change the pouch before it becomes excessively full or heavy.

Wash and dry your hands.

Gently lift an edge of the adhesive.

Support the surrounding skin while slowly peeling the appliance away.

Avoid rapidly pulling the adhesive from the skin.

Dispose of the used appliance appropriately.

Clean and inspect the peristomal skin before applying a replacement pouch.

Checking for pressure

Deep Convex appliances provide more pronounced convex support than Light or Soft Convex products.

Check the skin regularly for:

  • Persistent redness

  • Pressure marks

  • Soreness

  • Broken skin

  • Ulceration

  • Pain

  • Discomfort around the stoma

Some temporary mild redness immediately after appliance removal may occur, but persistent pressure-related changes should be assessed.

A Deep Convex appliance should provide sufficient support to establish a secure seal without creating damaging pressure on the surrounding tissue.

Coloplast SenSura® Mio Convex Deep 1-Piece Closed Pouches combine pronounced convex support, integrated flexlines, BodyFit Technology®, a full-circle filter and soft textile covering in a one-piece colostomy appliance designed primarily for retracted stomas and deep inward body profiles requiring substantial support.

Always select the appliance according to the measured stoma, surrounding body profile and required degree of convexity. Deep Convex should provide sufficient support to achieve a secure seal without causing excessive pressure. Persistent leakage, pain, pressure-related skin changes or uncertainty regarding convexity should be discussed with a Stoma Care Nurse.
