ACTICOAT 7 is a sterile antimicrobial barrier dressing containing nanocrystalline silver, designed for use on partial- and full-thickness acute and chronic wounds where antimicrobial protection is required. Its five-layer construction combines three layers of nanocrystalline silver-coated low-adherent mesh with two absorbent rayon/polyester layers, helping to maintain a moist wound environment while providing sustained antimicrobial activity.

ACTICOAT 7 is indicated as an antimicrobial barrier dressing for partial- and full-thickness wounds, including:
- Pressure ulcers
- Venous leg ulcers
- Diabetic ulcers
- Burns
- Recipient graft sites
- Infected wounds where antimicrobial management is clinically appropriate
When ACTICOAT 7 is used on an infected wound, the infection should also be assessed and treated according to the appropriate local clinical protocol. It is not intended to replace systemic treatment where this is clinically required.
Composition:
ACTICOAT 7 has a five-layer construction consisting of:

When the dressing is moistened, silver is released into the wound environment to provide sustained antimicrobial activity.
How to use:
Clean the wound according to the recommended wound-care protocol.
Do not use saline to activate or moisten ACTICOAT 7.
Remove the dressing from the sterile packaging using a clean or aseptic technique.
Moisten ACTICOAT 7 according to the local clinical protocol using an appropriate liquid such as sterile water – not saline. Remove excess water before application; Smith+Nephew advises allowing the dressing to drain on a sterile surface for approximately 2 minutes.
Cut the dressing to the required shape if necessary and apply directly to the wound surface.
Cover with an appropriate secondary dressing that maintains a moist wound environment.
For highly exuding wounds, use an absorbent secondary dressing. Film dressings are not recommended for highly exuding wounds.
Keep ACTICOAT 7 moist during use, but avoid excessive moisture that could cause maceration of the surrounding tissue.
Dressing change frequency:
ACTICOAT 7 can remain in place for up to 7 days.
The actual frequency of dressing changes should depend on:
- Amount of wound exudate
- Condition of the wound
- Condition of the surrounding skin
- Infection status
- Clinical assessment
If the dressing dries out or adheres to the wound, moisten or soak it before removal to help avoid disruption of the healing wound surface.

Do not use in patients with a known sensitivity to silver.
ACTICOAT 7 is not compatible with oil-based products such as petrolatum, as these may interfere with the dressing's function.
Do not use saline to activate or moisten the dressing.
Avoid contact with electrodes or conductive gels during electronic measurements such as ECG or EEG.
ACTICOAT dressings within the anatomical field being examined should be removed for MRI scanning. The dressing should also be removed before radiation therapy and a new dressing applied afterwards where continued treatment is required.
Do not use if the colour of the dressing is not uniform.
Transient discomfort or pain may occasionally occur when ACTICOAT is applied. If persistent pain occurs after application, remove the dressing and discontinue use.
Use in premature infants under 37 weeks' gestation only when the clinical benefit outweighs the potential risk, as clinical data in this group are limited.
ACTICOAT 7 is a single-use sterile dressing. Once the package has been opened, the sterile barrier is compromised and any unused portion should not be retained for later use.
