L-Mesitran is a range of antimicrobial medical-grade honey wound-care products designed to support the management of acute and chronic wounds through moist wound healing, autolytic debridement and antimicrobial activity.

How medical-grade honey works

Medical-grade honey has several actions relevant to wound care.

Its high osmotic activity draws fluid towards the wound surface. This can help:

Medical-grade honey also creates an environment that is unfavourable to many microorganisms.

L-Mesitran Ointment

Application

Apply a thin layer directly to the wound and cover with a suitable secondary dressing.

The product itself does not provide sufficient fixation or exudate absorption for most wounds, so the secondary dressing should be selected according to wound condition and exudate level.

L-Mesitran Soft

L-Mesitran Soft is a softer wound gel containing:

40% Medical Grade Honey

together with:

• Medical-grade hypoallergenic lanolin
• Propylene glycol
• PEG 4000
• Vitamins C and E.

The lower honey concentration and formulation are intended to make it suitable where a gentler honey formulation is preferred.

Suitable wounds

Current UK indications include:

• First- and second-degree burns

Mediq currently advises reapplication according to wound exudate and clinical need, typically when the product has dissolved, approximately:

Every 24–48 hours.

L-Mesitran Soft is a single-patient multi-use product.

L-Mesitran Hydro

L-Mesitran Hydro is a non-bordered hydro-active honey hydrogel dressing containing:

30% Medical Grade Honey

combined with:

• Acrylic polymer gel
• Water
• Polyurethane film backing.

It both donates moisture to dry tissue and absorbs wound fluid.

Mediq states that the honey-hydrogel pad can absorb at least seven times its own weight in wound fluid.

Suitable wounds

L-Mesitran Hydro is intended primarily for low to moderately exuding wounds, including:

• Pressure ulcers
• Venous ulcers
• Diabetic ulcers
• Cuts
• Abrasions
• Donor sites.

Because Hydro has no adhesive border, it requires suitable fixation.

L-Mesitran Border

L-Mesitran Border uses the same type of hydro-active honey formulation as L-Mesitran Hydro but incorporates an adhesive border.

It contains:

within a hydro-active polymer dressing.

It is particularly suitable for superficial wounds where an integrated adhesive fixation system is convenient.

The manufacturer describes it for superficial acute and chronic wounds such as:

• Abrasions
• Cuts
• Surgical wounds
• Burns.

Choosing between the products

The practical distinction is:

Infection

L-Mesitran products provide antimicrobial activity and may form part of the management of appropriately assessed colonised or infected wounds.

They do not replace systemic treatment where this is clinically required.

Seek appropriate clinical assessment where there is:

• Spreading redness
• Increasing swelling
• Increasing pain
• Heat
• Purulent discharge
• Cellulitis
• Fever
• Rapid wound deterioration
• Signs of systemic infection

Possible initial discomfort

Medical honey can occasionally cause temporary:

• Stinging
• Burning
• Increased discomfort

because of its osmotic activity.

If discomfort is severe or persists, treatment should be discontinued and the wound reassessed.

Allergy and hypersensitivity

Do not use L-Mesitran where there is known hypersensitivity to any of the product ingredients.

This is particularly relevant because L-Mesitran Soft and Ointment contain medical-grade lanolin, and L-Mesitran Ointment contains several additional botanical/oil ingredients. The manufacturer specifically lists hypersensitivity to any component as a contraindication.

Diabetes

Topical medical honey is not the same as eating honey, but patients with diabetic wounds require appropriate professional assessment and monitoring.

Diabetic wounds also require management of:

Secondary dressings

L-Mesitran Ointment and Soft require a secondary dressing.

There are two catalogue points worth noting.

First, current Mediq UK commercial packs for Hydro and Border are boxes of 5, while dm+d still contains legacy/reference pack structures of single dressings and boxes of 10. For your retail website I would use the actual Mediq pack of 5 if that is what you are purchasing.

Second, I would not add L-Mesitran Net to your current UK range. It was discontinued in dm+d from 1 October 2025, and its Drug Tariff reimbursement ended on 1 January 2026.

So for a clean current UK pharmacy page, I would list just Soft 15g, Ointment 20g, Ointment 50g, Hydro 10×10cm ×5 and Border 10×10cm ×5.
