Paracetamol 250mg Suppositories are a rectal pain-relief and fever-reducing medicine for children aged 6 years and over, particularly useful where taking paracetamol by mouth is difficult or unsuitable.

Each suppository contains 250mg of paracetamol, an analgesic and antipyretic medicine used to relieve mild to moderate pain and reduce fever.

They may be used for symptoms such as:

• Headache

• Toothache

• Earache

• Sore throat

• Aches and pains associated with colds and flu

• Fever / high temperature

The suppository formulation can be particularly useful when a child is unable to take oral paracetamol, for example because of nausea, vomiting or difficulty swallowing medicines.

What are Paracetamol 250mg Suppositories used for?

Paracetamol has two principal actions:

• Analgesic – helps relieve pain

• Antipyretic – helps reduce fever

Paracetamol 250mg Suppositories may be used for the treatment of mild to moderate pain and fever in children, including:

• Headache

• Toothache

• Earache

• Sore throat

• Cold and flu aches

• General aches and pains

• Fever

Why use a suppository?

A suppository is inserted into the rectum, where paracetamol is absorbed into the body.

This route can be particularly useful where a child:

• Cannot swallow tablets

• Refuses oral medicine

• Feels nauseous

• Is vomiting

• Cannot conveniently take liquid or other oral paracetamol preparations

Rectal paracetamol still contributes to the child's total daily paracetamol dose.

Do not give another medicine containing paracetamol at the same time unless specifically advised by a healthcare professional.

Directions for use

For rectal use only.

For the Phoenix Labs Paracetamol 250mg Suppositories:

Children aged 6–9 years (20–30kg):

• 1 suppository per dose

Children aged 10–12 years (30–40kg):

• 1–2 suppositories per dose

Doses may be repeated if required:

• Leave at least 4 hours between doses

• Do not give more than 4 doses in 24 hours

• Do not exceed the recommended dose

The child's age and weight should both be considered when deciding the appropriate dose.

Do not use for more than 3 days unless advised by a doctor.

Use whole suppositories only

Suppositories should be administered whole.

Do not cut or divide a suppository to obtain a smaller dose.

If the required dose cannot be achieved with a whole 250mg suppository, ask a pharmacist or doctor about a more appropriate strength or formulation.

How to use a suppository

1. Wash and dry your hands.

2. Remove one suppository from its wrapper immediately before use.

3. If possible, the child should empty their bowels before administration.

4. Gently insert the suppository into the rectum.

5. Wash your hands afterwards.

Do not use with other medicines containing paracetamol

This is particularly important.

Many medicines contain paracetamol, including some:

• Children's pain-relief liquids

• Fever medicines

• Cold and flu remedies

• Prescription medicines

Do not give any other medicine containing paracetamol at the same time.

Taking too much paracetamol can cause serious liver damage, even if the child initially appears well.

If too much paracetamol is given

Seek immediate medical advice following an overdose, even if the child appears well.

Paracetamol overdose can cause delayed and potentially serious liver damage.

Do not wait for symptoms to develop.

Do not use if:

• The child is allergic to paracetamol

• The child is allergic to any of the other ingredients

• Another paracetamol-containing medicine is already being given and the combined dose would exceed the recommended amount

Speak to a pharmacist or doctor before use if:

• The child has liver problems

• The child has kidney problems

• The child is unusually small or underweight for their age

• You are unsure of the correct dose

• The child is taking other medicines

• Paracetamol is required for longer than 3 days

• Symptoms persist or worsen

Possible side effects

Like all medicines, paracetamol may cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

Possible side effects include:

• Redness or soreness of the rectal lining

• Allergic reactions

• Skin rash

• Hives

Stop using the medicine and seek urgent medical advice if the child develops:

• Difficulty breathing

• Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat

• Severe or widespread skin rash

• Other signs of a serious allergic reaction

Very rare serious skin reactions and blood disorders have been reported with paracetamol.
