OptiFlo R 6% Citric Acid Catheter Maintenance Solution 50ml (Code: CSR50) – Box of 12
OptiFlo R is a sterile 6% citric acid (Solution R) catheter maintenance solution designed to help manage severe encrustation and crystalline deposits in indwelling urinary catheters.
The higher-strength citric acid solution helps dissolve mineral deposits that can build up within or around the catheter and contribute to blockage. OptiFlo R may also be used before removal of a heavily encrusted catheter, where this forms part of an appropriate catheter-management plan.
The ready-to-use 50ml solution is supplied in OptiFlo's bellows-style container, designed to allow gentle and controlled administration.
Key features:
-
6% citric acid – Solution R
-
Designed for severe catheter encrustation
-
Helps dissolve crystalline and gritty mineral deposits
-
Helps maintain catheter patency where encrustation is a recognised problem
-
May be used prior to removal of an encrusted catheter where clinically indicated
-
Twice the citric acid concentration of OptiFlo G 3.23%
-
Sterile, ready-to-use solution
-
Bellows-style container allows gentle, controlled administration
-
50ml per container
-
Product code: CSR50
-
Box of 12 × 50ml
Suitable for:
-
Maintenance of an indwelling urinary catheter
-
Catheters affected by significant mineral encrustation
-
Dissolving gritty or crystalline deposits
-
Recurrent catheter blockage where encrustation has been identified as the cause
-
Use before catheter removal where significant encrustation is present and Solution R has been recommended
-
Use according to an individual catheter-maintenance plan or healthcare professional's instructions
OptiFlo R is not intended as a routine saline flush. For mechanical flushing of blood clots, mucus or debris, OptiFlo S 0.9% saline is the appropriate product within the range. For less severe encrustation, OptiFlo G 3.23% citric acid (Suby G) may be used where clinically appropriate.
Directions:
Use only according to an established catheter-maintenance protocol or the instructions of an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.
Wash and dry hands thoroughly and maintain appropriate aseptic technique.
Remove the OptiFlo container from its packaging and check that it is intact.
Connect the OptiFlo system to the urinary catheter according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Administer the solution gently and without excessive pressure.
Where clinically directed, the solution may be allowed appropriate contact with the catheter to assist dissolution of encrustation.
Some clinical protocols recommend two sequential instillations for significant encrustation; frequency and method should be determined by the individual catheter-care plan.
Disconnect the OptiFlo system after use and reconnect the appropriate catheter valve or drainage bag.
Dispose of the used container appropriately.
Important information:
-
For urinary catheter maintenance only
-
Contains 6% citric acid
-
Intended principally for significant or severe catheter encrustation
-
Use only where catheter maintenance has been clinically indicated

Citric acid solutions may cause bladder discomfort or irritation in some users
-
Stop the procedure and seek clinical advice if significant pain, resistance, bleeding or other unexpected symptoms occur
-
Do not use catheter maintenance solutions routinely to prevent catheter-associated urinary tract infection
-
Persistent catheter blockage requires clinical assessment to identify the underlying cause
-
Follow the manufacturer's instructions and the patient's individual catheter-management plan
-
Do not use if the packaging is damaged or the solution appears abnormal
-
