Acute Cough
How this service works
We offer assessment and treatment for acute cough through a private consultation with our pharmacist independent prescriber.
Acute cough is not covered under the NHS Pharmacy First service.
Private Pharmacist Prescribing
Our pharmacist independent prescriber can assess you and, where appropriate, provide treatment through a private consultation.
A private consultation fee applies, and treatment is only provided following a clinical assessment.

During your consultation:
- A clinical assessment will be carried out
- Your symptoms and duration will be reviewed
- Red-flag symptoms will be checked
- Treatment will only be provided if clinically appropriate
- Clear advice and safety-netting will be given
- If the condition is not suitable for pharmacy treatment, we will refer you to your GP or urgent care.
Important information
- Most acute coughs are caused by viral infections
- Antibiotics are not usually required
- Cough symptoms can last up to 3 weeks
- Worsening symptoms, breathlessness, chest pain, or fever may require urgent assessment
