Acute Otitis Media - Ear infections
How this service works
We offer assessment and treatment for ear infections through two routes, depending on age and eligibility.
NHS Pharmacy First: Children and young people (ages 1–17 years)
- Children aged 1 to 17 years may be eligible for assessment and treatment free of charge under the NHS Pharmacy First service, provided they meet the NHS clinical criteria.
- If eligible, treatment will be supplied in line with NHS guidance.
Private Pharmacist Prescribing: Adults (ages 18 years and over)
- For adults aged 18 years and over, ear infections are not covered by Pharmacy First.
However, our pharmacist independent prescriber can assess you and, where appropriate, provide treatment through a private consultation. - A private consultation fee applies, and any treatment is provided following a clinical assessment.
What to expect from your consultation
Regardless of the route:
- A full clinical assessment will be carried out
- Red-flag symptoms will be checked
- Treatment will only be provided if clinically appropriate
- Clear advice and safety-netting will be given
If the condition is not suitable for pharmacy treatment, we will refer you to your GP or urgent care.
Important information
- Not all ear infections require antibiotics
- Some cases may need further medical assessment
- Treatment is based on clinical need, not age alone
