Infected Insect Bites

How this service works

We offer assessment and treatment for infected insect bites and stings under the
NHS Pharmacy First service.

Who can use this service

Children and adults aged 1 year and over may be eligible for assessment and treatment under Pharmacy First, provided they meet the NHS clinical criteria.

What to expect from your consultation

During your consultation:

• The bite or affected area will be reviewed
• Signs of infection will be assessed
• Red-flag symptoms will be checked
• Treatment will be provided only if clinically appropriate
• Advice on symptom relief and preventing further infection will be given
• If the condition is not suitable for pharmacy treatment, we will refer you to your GP or urgent care.

Important information

• Not all insect bites or stings require antibiotics
• Many mild infections improve with good self-care
• Spreading redness, increasing pain, or fever may require further medical assessment
