Sinusitis
How this service works
We offer assessment and treatment for sinus infections through two routes, depending on age and eligibility.
Teenagers and adults (ages 12 years and over) – NHS Pharmacy First
- Patients aged 12 years and over may be eligible for assessment and treatment for a sinus infection under the NHS Pharmacy First service, provided they meet the NHS clinical criteria.
- If eligible, treatment will be supplied in line with NHS guidance.
Children (under 12 years) – Private Pharmacist Prescribing
- Sinus infections in children under 12 years of age are not covered under Pharmacy First. However, our pharmacist independent prescriber can assess your child and, where appropriate, provide treatment through a private consultation.
- A private consultation fee applies, and treatment is only provided following a clinical assessment.
What to expect from your consultation
Regardless of the route:
- A clinical assessment will be carried out
- Symptoms will be reviewed
- Red-flag symptoms will be checked
- Treatment will only be provided if clinically appropriate
- Advice on symptom relief and safety-netting will be given
- If the condition is not suitable for pharmacy treatment, we will refer you to your GP or urgent care.
Important information
- Many sinus infections are viral and improve without antibiotics
- Facial pain, congestion, and pressure are common symptoms
- Worsening symptoms or high fever may require further assessment
