Sore Throat
How this service works
We offer assessment and treatment for sore throat through two routes, depending on age and eligibility.
Children and adults (ages 5 years and over) – NHS Pharmacy First
- Patients aged 5 years and over may be eligible for assessment and treatment for sore throat free of charge under the NHS Pharmacy First service, provided they meet the NHS clinical criteria.
- If eligible, treatment will be supplied in line with NHS guidance.
Children (under 5 years) – Private Pharmacist Prescribing
- Sore throat in children under 5 years of age is not covered under Pharmacy First.
However, our pharmacist independent prescriber can assess your child and, where appropriate, provide treatment through a private consultation. - A private consultation fee applies, and treatment is only provided following a clinical assessment.
What to expect from your consultation
Regardless of the route:
- A clinical assessment will be carried out
- Symptoms will be reviewed
- Red-flag symptoms will be checked
- Treatment will only be provided if clinically appropriate
- Clear advice and safety-netting will be given
- If the condition is not suitable for pharmacy treatment, we will refer you to your GP or urgent care.
Important information
- Most sore throats are viral and improve without antibiotics
- Antibiotics are only used when clinically indicated
- Worsening symptoms, difficulty swallowing or breathing require urgent assessment
