How this service works
We offer assessment and treatment for simple urine infections (uncomplicated UTIs) through two routes, depending on age, sex, and eligibility.
Women (ages 16–64 years) – NHS Pharmacy First
Women aged 16 to 64 years may be eligible for assessment and treatment under the NHS Pharmacy First service, provided they meet the NHS clinical criteria.
If eligible, treatment will be supplied in line with NHS guidance.
When a private consultation is used - Private Pharmacist Prescribing
Urine infections outside the NHS Pharmacy First criteria are not covered by the service.
This includes:
- Women under 16 years
- Men of any age
- Patients who do not meet the NHS clinical criteria
In these cases, our pharmacist independent prescriber can assess and, where appropriate, provide treatment through a private consultation.
A private consultation fee applies, and treatment is only provided following a clinical assessment.
What to expect from your consultation
Regardless of the route:
- A clinical assessment will be carried out
- Symptoms will be reviewed and alternative causes considered
- Red-flag symptoms will be checked
- Treatment will only be provided if clinically appropriate
- Clear advice and safety-netting will be given
- If the condition is not suitable for pharmacy treatment, we will refer you to your GP or urgent care.
Important information
- Symptoms of a urine infection can overlap with other conditions
- Not all cases require antibiotics
- Fever, back pain, or worsening symptoms may need urgent assessment
