Biatain Silicone Ag Antimicrobial Silicone Foam Dressing
Biatain Silicone Ag is a sterile, self-adherent antimicrobial polyurethane foam dressing with silver and a soft silicone adhesive layer, designed for exuding wounds where bacterial burden, infection or risk of infection is a concern.
The dressing uses Coloplast's 3DFit Technology® to conform into the wound bed, helping reduce dead space and exudate pooling. The foam absorbs wound fluid vertically and retains it within the dressing, while silver ions are released into the wound environment.

3DFit Technology

This helps:
- Reduce gaps between the dressing and wound surface.

Antimicrobial silver action
Biatain Silicone Ag contains a silver complex incorporated into the polyurethane foam.
When the dressing absorbs wound exudate, silver ions are released into the wound environment. Coloplast reports broad antimicrobial activity against bacteria and fungi, with sustained antimicrobial activity for up to 7 days.
Silver dressings should generally be used where there is a clinical indication for antimicrobial treatment rather than routinely on uncomplicated wounds.
Suitable wound types
Biatain Silicone Ag is indicated for a wide range of low- to highly exuding acute and chronic wounds that are infected or at risk of infection, including:
- Leg ulcers
- Pressure ulcers / pressure injuries
- Diabetic foot ulcers
- Donor sites
- Post-operative wounds
- Traumatic wounds
- Other appropriate exuding wounds where antimicrobial management is required.
The underlying cause of chronic wounds should also be appropriately treated, for example:
- Compression for suitable venous leg ulcers
- Off-loading for diabetic foot ulcers
- Pressure redistribution for pressure injuries
- Vascular assessment where arterial disease is suspected
How to use
- Cleanse the wound according to appropriate clinical practice.
- Dry the surrounding skin.
- Select a dressing with an absorbent pad large enough to cover the wound adequately.
- Remove the protective liners.
- Apply the dressing with the silicone adhesive side towards the wound.
- Position without stretching the dressing.
- Smooth the adhesive border onto the surrounding intact skin.
- Additional fixation is normally unnecessary because the dressing has an integrated silicone border.
Exudate management
Biatain Silicone Ag is suitable across a broad range from:
Low to high exudate
The foam absorbs fluid vertically and retains exudate within its structure, helping reduce:
- Leakage
- Exudate pooling
- Maceration of wound edges
- Moisture damage to surrounding skin.
Use under compression
Biatain Silicone Ag may be used beneath compression therapy where compression is clinically indicated.
This is particularly relevant for appropriately assessed venous leg ulcers.
The dressing itself does not provide compression.
Dressing changes
Biatain Silicone Ag may remain in place for up to:
7 days
depending on:
- Wound condition

- Dressing saturation

Infection

Seek clinical assessment where there is:
- Increasing redness
- Increasing pain
- Heat or swelling
- Purulent discharge
- Cellulitis
- Fever
- Spreading inflammation
- Rapid wound deterioration
The continued need for antimicrobial silver treatment should be reviewed regularly.
