GentleCath™ Air is a compact hydrophilic intermittent urinary catheter from Convatec, designed for convenient, discreet self-catheterisation at home or while away.

This is designed to provide a smooth catheter surface with minimal sticking, residue or mess during catheterisation.

GentleCath Air is available in Male Straight/Nelaton, Male Tiemann/Coudé and Female configurations, with multiple Charrière (CH) sizes.

All options in this listing are supplied in a box of 30 single-use intermittent catheters.

What is GentleCath Air used for?

GentleCath Air is intended for intermittent urinary catheterisation.

Intermittent catheterisation involves temporarily inserting a catheter through the urethra into the bladder to allow urine to drain.

Once the bladder has emptied, the catheter is removed and discarded.

A new catheter is used for each catheterisation.

Intermittent catheterisation may be recommended for people who are unable to empty their bladder completely because of conditions affecting:

  • Bladder function

  • Nerve supply to the bladder

  • Urinary retention

  • Spinal cord function

  • Neurological conditions

  • Other urological conditions

The exact catheter type, diameter and catheterisation frequency should be determined by an appropriate healthcare professional.

FeelClean Technology™

GentleCath Air incorporates Convatec's FeelClean Technology™.

With conventional hydrophilic catheters, the slippery surface is commonly created by applying a hydrophilic coating to the outside of the catheter.

With FeelClean Technology™, the hydrophilic properties are integrated into the catheter material itself.

When activated, the catheter surface becomes slippery without relying on a traditional PVP hydrophilic surface coating.

The technology is designed to help provide:

  • Smooth catheter insertion

  • Smooth catheter withdrawal

  • Reduced sticking

  • Minimal residue

  • Less mess during catheterisation

  • Gentle contact with the urethra

GentleCath Air for Men

GentleCath Air for Men is a compact male-length intermittent catheter supplied in discreet, portable packaging.

It incorporates:

  • FeelClean Technology™

  • Integrated pure-water activation sachet

  • Protective handling sleeve

  • Resealable disposal pouch

  • Colour-coded catheter funnel

  • Straight/Nelaton or Tiemann/Coudé options

The compact pack is designed to fit easily into a:

  • Pocket

  • Bag

  • Backpack

  • Travel kit

making it suitable for use both at home and away.

Integrated pure-water sachet – Male version

GentleCath Air for Men includes a pure-water sachet inside the package.

Before opening the catheter:

  1. Burst the water sachet.

  2. Allow the water to activate FeelClean Technology™.

  3. Open the package according to Convatec's instructions.

  4. Use the protective sleeve to handle and advance the catheter.

There is therefore no need to carry:

  • Separate water

  • Lubricating gel

  • A separate catheter activation solution

Protective handling sleeve – Male version

GentleCath Air for Men has an easy-to-handle sleeve.

The sleeve allows the catheter to be held and advanced while reducing unnecessary hand contact with the catheter shaft.

This helps support a non-touch catheterisation technique and reduces the risk of accidentally contaminating the catheter during insertion.

Resealable disposal pouch

After catheterisation, the male GentleCath Air catheter can be returned to its original pouch.

The pouch can then be resealed for discreet disposal.

This can be particularly useful when catheterising:

  • At work

  • While travelling

  • In public toilets

  • Away from home

Male Straight / Nelaton catheter

The standard Male GentleCath Air options use a straight/Nelaton tip.

A Nelaton catheter has a:

  • Straight catheter shaft

  • Smooth rounded tip

This is the standard tip type used by many people performing intermittent catheterisation.

The Male Straight range is available from:

CH08 to CH18

Male Tiemann / Coudé catheter

GentleCath Air is also available with a Tiemann/Coudé tip.

A Tiemann catheter has a slightly curved and tapered tip.

This type of catheter may be recommended where passage of a straight catheter is difficult because of the individual's anatomy or urological condition.

The Male Tiemann range is available from:

CH08 to CH18

A Tiemann/Coudé catheter requires correct orientation during insertion.

Only use a Tiemann/Coudé catheter if you have been advised and trained to use this catheter type by an appropriate healthcare professional.

Do not substitute a Tiemann catheter for a straight catheter simply because the CH size is the same.

GentleCath Air for Women

GentleCath Air for Women is a compact female intermittent catheter designed specifically for discreet self-catheterisation.

The current UK Female V2.0 range is available in:

  • CH10

  • CH12

  • CH14

The compact design is intended to resemble an everyday personal-care product rather than a conventional catheter package.

Features include:

  • FeelClean Technology™

  • Compact design

  • Full effective catheter length despite the compact case

  • Long funnel for hygienic handling

  • AirCase™ cap that attaches to the base during use

  • Transparent catheter

  • Portable design

  • PVC-free construction

  • DEHP-free construction

  • Recyclable case

Compact female AirCase™

The Female GentleCath Air is contained in a compact AirCase™.

The cap can attach to the base while catheterising, reducing the number of loose components that need to be managed.

The design is intended to provide:

  • Discretion

  • Portability

  • Simple handling

  • Easier use away from home

It can be carried discreetly in a handbag, pocket or travel kit.

Understanding CH sizes

CH means Charrière, also commonly referred to as French gauge or Fr.

It describes the external diameter of the catheter.

Approximate external diameters are:

  • CH08 = 2.7mm

  • CH10 = 3.3mm

  • CH12 = 4.0mm

  • CH14 = 4.7mm

  • CH16 = 5.3mm

  • CH18 = 6.0mm

A higher CH number indicates a wider catheter.

Always use the exact CH size prescribed or recommended by your healthcare professional.

Do not change catheter size without appropriate clinical advice.

Choosing between Straight and Tiemann

For male users there are two tip configurations.

Straight / Nelaton

  • Straight rounded tip

  • Standard intermittent catheter configuration

  • Suitable for users who have been prescribed a straight catheter

Tiemann / Coudé

  • Curved tapered tip

  • Designed for specific catheterisation requirements

  • Requires correct orientation during insertion

  • Should only be used following appropriate professional assessment and training

The catheter tip should not be changed without advice from the healthcare professional responsible for the user's bladder management.

How to use GentleCath Air

Always follow Convatec's Instructions for Use and the catheterisation technique taught by your healthcare professional.

The exact preparation differs between the Male and Female products.

In general:

  1. Wash and dry your hands.

  2. Check that the catheter package is intact.

  3. Prepare the catheter according to the manufacturer's instructions.

  4. For the Male version, burst the integrated water sachet to activate the catheter.

  5. Position yourself comfortably.

  6. Clean the urethral area according to your normal catheterisation routine.

  7. Handle the catheter using the appropriate grip, sleeve or funnel.

  8. Gently insert the catheter into the urethra.

  9. Continue until urine begins to flow.

  10. Allow the bladder to empty.

  11. Once urine flow has stopped, slowly withdraw the catheter.

  12. If urine begins flowing again during withdrawal, pause and allow drainage to finish.

  13. Remove the catheter completely.

  14. Dispose of it appropriately.

Never force the catheter against significant resistance.

Single use only

GentleCath Air catheters are designed for one catheterisation only.

After use:

  • Do not clean the catheter for reuse

  • Do not reinsert a previously used catheter

  • Do not attempt to reactivate it

  • Dispose of the catheter appropriately

  • Use a new sterile catheter for the next catheterisation
