Cutimed Siltec Sorbact is a sterile, bacteria- and fungi-binding absorbent foam dressing designed for the management of clean, contaminated, colonised or infected superficial wounds with low to moderate levels of exudate.

The dressing combines a green Sorbact DACC™-coated wound-contact layer with an absorbent polyurethane foam containing superabsorbent stripes. The Sorbact layer binds microorganisms through hydrophobic interaction, while the foam absorbs and retains wound exudate.

Sorbact Technology

The green wound-contact layer is coated with:

DACC – dialkylcarbamoyl chloride

DACC makes the dressing surface strongly hydrophobic.

Many wound-related bacteria and fungi also have hydrophobic surface characteristics. When microorganisms come into direct contact with the Sorbact surface, they bind to it through hydrophobic interaction.

The microorganisms remain attached to the dressing and are physically removed from the wound when the dressing is changed.

This differs from conventional antimicrobial dressings containing substances such as:

  • Silver
  • Iodine
  • PHMB
  • Honey

because Cutimed Siltec Sorbact does not release an antimicrobial substance into the wound bed.

Dressing construction

Cutimed Siltec Sorbact combines:

  • Green DACC-coated Sorbact wound-contact layer
  • Absorbent polyurethane foam
  • Integrated superabsorbent stripes
  • Protective outer layer

The Sorbact wound-contact layer must make direct contact with the wound surface for microorganisms to bind effectively.

Suitable wound types

Cutimed Siltec Sorbact is intended for superficial, low to moderately exuding wounds, including:

  • Surgical wounds
  • Traumatic wounds
  • Pressure ulcers / pressure injuries
  • Diabetic foot ulcers
  • Leg ulcers

It can be used on wounds that are:

  • Clean
  • Contaminated
  • Colonised
  • Infected

where use of a bacteria-binding dressing is clinically appropriate.

The underlying cause of chronic wounds must also be appropriately managed, for example:

  • Compression therapy for suitable venous leg ulcers
  • Off-loading for diabetic foot ulcers
  • Pressure redistribution for pressure injuries
  • Vascular assessment where arterial disease is suspected

Exudate level

Cutimed Siltec Sorbact is specifically intended for:

Low to moderate wound exudate

The polyurethane foam absorbs wound fluid while the superabsorbent stripes help retain it within the dressing.

For wounds with substantially higher levels of exudate, another Sorbact-based absorbent product or a more absorbent secondary system may be more appropriate.

How to use

  1. Prepare and cleanse the wound according to local wound-care practice.
  2. Ensure the surrounding skin is clean and dry.
  3. Select a dressing that adequately covers the wound and overlaps the wound margins.
  4. Remove the dressing from its sterile pouch using aseptic technique.
  5. If required, cut the dressing to fit the wound using aseptic technique.
  6. Discard any unused cut-off pieces.
  7. Apply the dressing so that the green Sorbact wound-contact layer is in direct contact with the complete wound surface.
  8. Secure using an appropriate:
    • Elastic bandage
    • Skin-friendly tape
    • Retention system
    • Compression system, where clinically indicated.

Can Cutimed Siltec Sorbact be cut?

Yes.

The standard non-bordered Cutimed Siltec Sorbact dressing can be cut using aseptic technique to adapt it to different wound sizes, shapes and anatomical locations.

Any unused cut pieces should be discarded and not stored for later use.

This is different from Cutimed Siltec Sorbact B, the bordered version, which the manufacturer specifically instructs not to cut.

Fixation

Standard Cutimed Siltec Sorbact does not have an integrated adhesive border.

It therefore normally requires fixation with:

  • Bandage
  • Skin-friendly tape
  • Retention garment
  • Compression bandaging where clinically appropriate.

If an all-in-one bordered dressing is required, Cutimed Siltec Sorbact B is the corresponding silicone-bordered version.

Use under compression

The dressing can be used under compression therapy where compression is clinically indicated, for example in an appropriately assessed venous leg ulcer.

The dressing itself does not provide compression.

Dressing changes

Dressing-change frequency depends on:

  • Wound exudate
  • Dressing saturation
  • Wound condition
  • Condition of the surrounding skin
  • Infection status
  • Clinical judgement

Where clinically appropriate, Cutimed Siltec Sorbact may remain in place for up to:

7 days.

Change sooner if:

  • The dressing becomes saturated
  • Leakage develops
  • The dressing becomes displaced
  • The wound requires reassessment
  • The surrounding skin deteriorates
  • Signs of infection increase

Removal

  1. Remove any additional fixation.
  2. Gently lift and remove Cutimed Siltec Sorbact from the wound.
  3. Discard the used dressing.

Because bacteria and fungi are physically bound to the Sorbact layer, removing the dressing also removes bound microorganisms from the wound environment.

Infection

Cutimed Siltec Sorbact may be used as part of the management of infected wounds.

However, it does not replace appropriate treatment of:

  • Cellulitis
  • Spreading infection
  • Osteomyelitis
  • Sepsis
  • Other systemic infections

Seek appropriate clinical assessment if there is:

  • Increasing redness
  • Swelling
  • Increasing pain
  • Heat
  • Purulent discharge
  • Offensive odour
  • Fever
  • Spreading inflammation
  • Rapid wound deterioration

Systemic antibiotics or other treatment may still be required.

Resistance

Because Sorbact Technology works by physical hydrophobic binding rather than releasing an antimicrobial active substance, the manufacturer states that development of bacterial or fungal resistance to the dressing's mechanism is not expected.
