Renasys Go Canister

RENASYS GO Canisters are single-use fluid collection canisters for use with the RENASYS GO Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) system.

They collect wound exudate and other fluids removed from the wound during negative pressure therapy. The UK range includes 300ml and 750ml canisters with solidifier, allowing the canister capacity to be selected according to the expected level of wound drainage.

Important: For patients considered to be at high risk of bleeding, Smith+Nephew recommends using the 300ml canister rather than the 750ml canister.

How it works:

The RENASYS GO therapy unit applies controlled negative pressure to the wound dressing.

Wound exudate is drawn:

1. From the wound
2. Through the wound dressing
3. Through the RENASYS Soft Port or appropriate drain
4. Through the connecting tubing
5. Into the RENASYS GO canister

The canister contains a solidifying agent that helps gel collected wound fluid.

An integral two-stage bacterial filtration system helps protect the RENASYS GO device against overflow and the spread of aspirated microorganisms.

How to install:

The canister should be installed by an appropriately trained healthcare professional, or by a patient or carer who has received specific training in the use of the RENASYS GO system.

In general:

1. Ensure the RENASYS GO device is switched off.
2. Release the canister tubing to its full length.
3. Open the retaining clips on the sides of the device.
4. Position the canister correctly in the RENASYS GO unit.
5. Secure the canister using the retaining clips.
6. Connect the canister tubing to the RENASYS Soft Port or dressing tubing using the quick-click connector.
7. Ensure all connections are secure.
8. Start therapy at the pressure prescribed by the treating healthcare professional.
9. Confirm that the dressing is compressed appropriately and that the system is maintaining negative pressure.

Always follow the RENASYS GO User Manual and the instructions provided by the patient's healthcare professional.

Position during use:

For optimum operation, the RENASYS GO device and canister should preferably remain in an upright position.

This helps:

• Maximise usable canister capacity
• Optimise the canister-overcapacity alarm
• Maintain effective fluid collection

The device can be used horizontally when positioned correctly with the device facing upward, but upright positioning is preferred where practical.

When to change the canister:

RENASYS GO Canisters should be changed:

• At least once every 7 days
• When the contents reach the 300ml or 750ml maximum fill line
• Whenever changing to a different patient
• Earlier if clinically required
• More frequently if wound exudate levels are high

Do not wait for the canister-overcapacity alarm before changing a visibly full canister.

Check the canister regularly during therapy.

Monitoring the canister:

Regularly check:

• The amount of exudate collected
• The colour and appearance of wound fluid
• For evidence of blood
• For cracks or damage to the canister
• Tubing connections
• Tubing for kinks or blockage

Replace the canister immediately if it is cracked or damaged.

Bleeding warning:

Bleeding is a potentially serious complication of Negative Pressure Wound Therapy.

The canister viewing window should be checked frequently for signs of bleeding.

Particular caution is required in patients:

• At increased risk of bleeding
• Taking anticoagulant or antiplatelet medicines
• With vascular grafts
• With fragile blood vessels
• Following recent surgery
• Where haemostasis may not be secure

For patients at high risk of bleeding, use the 300ml RENASYS GO canister.

Seek urgent medical attention if:

• Bright red blood appears in the tubing or canister
• There is sudden or significant bleeding
• The volume of bloody drainage increases rapidly

Follow the patient's NPWT emergency plan where one has been provided.

Infection and exudate monitoring:

NPWT does not replace appropriate treatment of wound infection.

Seek clinical review if there is:

• Increasing redness or swelling
• Increasing wound pain
• Purulent drainage
• Offensive odour
• Fever
• Sudden deterioration of the wound
• Significant change in the volume or appearance of exudate

Important information:

RENASYS GO Canisters are accessories for the RENASYS GO Negative Pressure Wound Therapy system.

They do not provide negative pressure therapy when used independently.

Use only with:

• A compatible RENASYS GO therapy unit
• Approved RENASYS dressing systems
• Approved RENASYS tubing and accessories

The RENASYS GO device should only be used with the specified RENASYS GO 300ml or 750ml canisters.

Do not use RENASYS TOUCH canisters with the RENASYS GO system.
