Kit contents:

Each stand-alone kit contains:

  • 1 × RENASYS Soft Port

The Soft Port itself is surrounded by approximately 11.4cm × 14cm polyurethane adhesive film, helping form a seal over the wound-covering transparent film.

Please note: The stand-alone Soft Port Kit does not contain the wound filler or the main transparent film required to seal the wound.

These must be supplied separately where required, for example:

  • RENASYS Foam Wound Filler
  • RENASYS Gauze Wound Filler
  • RENASYS Transparent Film

Alternatively, complete RENASYS-F or RENASYS-G Dressing Kits are available with a Soft Port already included.

How the Soft Port works:

During RENASYS Negative Pressure Wound Therapy:

  1. An appropriate wound filler such as foam or gauze is placed into the wound.
  2. The wound is sealed with transparent adhesive film.
  3. An opening is made in the transparent film over the wound filler according to the manufacturer's application instructions.
  4. The RENASYS Soft Port is positioned directly over this opening.
  5. The adhesive portion of the Soft Port forms a seal against the transparent film.
  6. The orange quick-click connector is attached to the compatible RENASYS canister tubing.
  7. When the RENASYS pump is activated, negative pressure is transferred through the Soft Port to the wound dressing.
  8. Wound exudate is drawn through the Soft Port and tubing towards the collection canister.

Correct placement of the Soft Port is essential for effective transfer of negative pressure.

How to apply:

The RENASYS Soft Port should be applied by an appropriately trained healthcare professional or according to a prescribed NPWT care plan.

In general:

  1. Prepare and fill the wound according to the prescribed NPWT technique.
  2. Cover the wound filler completely with appropriate transparent film to create an airtight seal.
  3. Create the required opening in the transparent film over the wound filler according to the RENASYS Instructions for Use.
  4. Remove any loose pieces of film from around the opening.
  5. Remove the adhesive backing from the Soft Port.
  6. Position the Soft Port so that its suction opening is aligned directly over the opening in the transparent film.
  7. Smooth the adhesive portion firmly onto the transparent film.
  8. Remove the stabilisation frame where applicable.
  9. Secure the Soft Port tubing according to local protocol.
  10. Connect the orange quick-click connector to the RENASYS canister tubing.
  11. Start the RENASYS therapy unit at the prescribed pressure.
  12. Check that the dressing compresses appropriately and remains firm and leak-free.

An audible click should normally be heard when the quick-click connection is correctly engaged.

Important application point:

The Soft Port contains an aeration disc near the orange quick-click connector.

Do not cover or occlude the aeration disc with:

  • Adhesive tape
  • Bandages
  • Clothing fixation
  • Other securing materials

Correct airflow through the Soft Port system is important for proper operation and alarm functionality.

Correct positioning:

The Soft Port should be positioned where:

  • The tubing is not compressed
  • The patient is unlikely to lie directly on the connection
  • The adhesive can form a secure seal
  • The port opening is directly aligned over the opening in the transparent wound film
  • Tubing can run without excessive pulling or tension

Its flexible design allows use on anatomical areas that can be difficult for rigid NPWT ports.

Compatible wound fillers:

RENASYS Soft Port can be used with appropriate RENASYS wound-filling systems including:

  • RENASYS-F Foam
  • RENASYS-G Gauze
  • Other RENASYS wound fillers specifically approved for the relevant NPWT application

The wound filler and transparent film must be selected according to the wound type and treatment plan.

Use with a Y Connector:

A stand-alone Soft Port may also be useful when using a RENASYS Y Connector.

A Y Connector can connect:

  • Two RENASYS Soft Ports

to:

  • One compatible RENASYS NPWT pump

This may be used for two ports on one wound or two appropriate wounds where the same therapy pressure is suitable.

Do not connect an infected wound and a non-infected wound through the same Y Connector.

Dressing changes:

The Soft Port is a single-use component and should be replaced when the associated NPWT dressing is changed.

Manufacturer clinical guidance states that a Soft Port dressing may remain in place for up to 72 hours, depending on:

  • Wound condition
  • Exudate level
  • Infection status
  • Integrity of the seal
  • Clinical judgement

More frequent dressing changes may be necessary where there is:

  • Heavy exudate
  • Thick or viscous exudate
  • Blood in the drainage
  • Infection
  • Leakage
  • Loss of negative pressure
  • Soiling or contamination

Follow the prescribed dressing-change schedule and local NPWT protocol.

Important information:

RENASYS Soft Port is an accessory for Negative Pressure Wound Therapy.

It does not provide NPWT when used independently.

It must be used with:

  • An appropriate wound filler
  • A correctly sealed wound dressing
  • Compatible RENASYS tubing
  • An appropriate RENASYS canister
  • A compatible RENASYS NPWT therapy unit

RENASYS Soft Port is compatible with RENASYS NPWT systems, subject to the Instructions for Use for the individual pump and consumables.

Do not use if:

  • The sterile packaging is damaged or previously opened
  • The Soft Port is damaged
  • The tubing is split or damaged
  • The adhesive area is compromised
  • A secure wound seal cannot be achieved

Do not:

  • Re-use
  • Re-sterilise
  • Modify or cut the Soft Port tubing
  • Block the aeration disc
  • Use with incompatible NPWT equipment

Bleeding warning:

Bleeding is a potentially serious complication of Negative Pressure Wound Therapy.

Monitor the Soft Port and tubing for blood during therapy.

The white Soft Port covering can help make changes in the colour of wound fluid more visible.

If bright red blood is seen in the Soft Port or tubing:

  • Stop therapy according to the patient's NPWT emergency protocol
  • Assess the wound
  • Control the bleeding
  • Seek urgent clinical advice where appropriate

Haemostasis should be achieved before NPWT is started.

Particular care is required in patients:

  • At increased risk of bleeding
  • Taking anticoagulant or antiplatelet medicines
  • With vascular grafts
  • With fragile vessels
  • Following recent surgery
  • Where haemostasis may not be secure

Blockage and leak monitoring:

If the pump indicates a blockage or loss of pressure:

  • Check the Soft Port position
  • Check the tubing for kinks or compression
  • Check the adhesive seal
  • Check the opening beneath the Soft Port
  • Check all connectors
  • Check the canister and canister tubing

A poorly aligned Soft Port can reduce fluid evacuation and may interfere with accurate blockage detection.

If a blockage cannot be identified or corrected, replace the affected component according to the RENASYS troubleshooting guidance.

Infection:

NPWT does not replace appropriate management of wound infection.

Monitor the wound for:

  • Increasing redness
  • Swelling
  • Increasing pain
  • Purulent exudate
  • Offensive odour
  • Fever
  • Deterioration of the wound

Infected wounds may require more frequent dressing changes and additional treatment.
