Exufiber & Exufiber Ag+ Gelling Fibre Dressing
Exufiber and Exufiber Ag+ are sterile gelling fibre wound dressings made from highly absorbent polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibres, designed for the management of moderately to highly exuding wounds.
On contact with wound exudate, the fibres absorb fluid and transform into a soft, conformable gel. Mölnlycke's Hydrolock® Technology helps absorb, retain and transfer exudate while maintaining the structural integrity of the dressing, allowing it to be removed cleanly in one piece.
Two versions are available:
- Exufiber – standard non-antimicrobial gelling fibre dressing
- Exufiber Ag+ – antimicrobial gelling fibre dressing containing silver sulphate
Exufiber
Exufiber is a sterile nonwoven gelling fibre dressing made from highly absorbent PVA fibres.

How Exufiber works:
Hydrophilic PVA fibres attract and absorb wound exudate.
As fluid enters the dressing:
- The fibres swell and form a soft gel.
- Exudate is retained within the dressing.
- Fluid is transferred both vertically and laterally through the dressing.
- The moist environment supports autolytic debridement.
- Slough and wound debris may become incorporated into the gel.
- The dressing maintains sufficient wet strength to support removal in one piece.
This helps reduce residual fibres and dressing debris in the wound during dressing changes.
How to use – flat wounds:
- Clean the wound according to normal clinical practice.
- Dry the surrounding skin thoroughly.
- Select an appropriate Exufiber dressing.
- Apply the dressing directly to the wound bed.
- Cover with an appropriate secondary dressing selected according to exudate level.
- Secure with an adhesive dressing, bandage or appropriate fixation system.
- Apply compression therapy where clinically prescribed.
Deep and cavity wounds:
For cavities, tunnels or undermining:
- Clean the wound according to clinical practice.
- Dry the surrounding skin.
- Loosely place the Exufiber ribbon or pad into the cavity.
- Do not tightly pack the wound; allow room for the dressing to swell as it absorbs exudate.
- When using a ribbon, leave approximately 2–3cm visible outside the wound to assist complete removal.
- Cover with an appropriate secondary dressing.
- Secure as required.
Always ensure all dressing material is removed at dressing change.
Donor sites:
When used on donor sites:
- Ensure haemostasis has been achieved.
- Select a dressing large enough to extend approximately 5cm beyond the wound.
- Apply Exufiber dry.
- Cover with an appropriate secondary dressing.
- Secure according to clinical practice.
Exufiber may remain in place for up to 14 days on donor sites, depending on wound condition and clinical practice.
Dressing changes:

- Local treatment protocol
Change earlier if:
- The secondary dressing becomes saturated

Important information – Exufiber:
Do not use Exufiber:
- On dry wounds
- On full-thickness burns
- In patients with known hypersensitivity to the dressing or its materials
If infection develops, appropriate treatment should be started according to clinical protocol.
Infection itself is not a contraindication to standard Exufiber, but Exufiber does not provide an antimicrobial effect and does not replace appropriate infection treatment.
Exufiber Ag+
Exufiber Ag+ is a sterile antimicrobial gelling fibre dressing made from absorbent PVA fibres coated with silver sulphate.
It provides the same fluid-management and gelling properties as the Exufiber range while additionally releasing antimicrobial silver ions when the dressing comes into contact with wound fluid.
It is intended for moderately to highly exuding wounds where antimicrobial action is clinically indicated.

Antimicrobial dressings should be regularly reassessed to determine whether continued silver treatment remains clinically necessary.

Do not use in patients with a known hypersensitivity to:
- Silver
- PVA
- Hydroxypropyl cellulose
- Any other component of the dressing
Be aware that:
- Data on prolonged or repeated use of silver dressings are limited, particularly in children and neonates.
- Frequent or prolonged silver exposure may result in permanent skin discolouration.
- Exufiber Ag+ does not replace systemic antibiotics or other appropriate treatment where clinical infection requires them.
- The wound should be reassessed if infection develops or deteriorates.
Where Exufiber Ag+ is present in an area undergoing radiotherapy, it should be removed before radiation treatment and a new dressing applied afterwards.
Avoid contact between silver dressings and:
- ECG electrodes
- EEG electrodes
- Conductive gels used for electrical measurements
unless compatibility has been specifically established.
