Biatain Ag Non-Adhesive
Biatain Ag Non-Adhesive is a sterile, non-adhesive antimicrobial polyurethane foam dressing containing ionic silver, designed for the management of exuding wounds with delayed healing due to bacteria or wounds at risk of infection.
The soft, conformable foam uses 3DFit Technology to conform to the wound bed, absorb wound exudate vertically and retain it within the dressing. When the foam comes into contact with wound exudate, silver ions are released at the wound bed, providing continuous antimicrobial activity throughout the wear time.
Biatain Ag Non-Adhesive demonstrates broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against bacteria and fungi for up to 7 days in vitro.

Biatain Ag Non-Adhesive is indicated for a wide range of acute and chronic exuding wounds with delayed healing due to bacteria or wounds at risk of infection, including:
- Leg ulcers
- Pressure ulcers
- Diabetic foot ulcers
- Second-degree burns
- Donor sites
- Post-operative wounds
- Traumatic wounds
- Skin abrasions
Biatain Ag Non-Adhesive may also be used on wounds where local or systemic infection is being treated, under the supervision of an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.
Composition:
Biatain Ag Non-Adhesive consists of a soft, absorbent polyurethane foam containing an antimicrobial silver complex.
The silver complex is distributed throughout the foam. When the dressing comes into contact with wound exudate, ionic silver is released, providing antimicrobial activity at the wound bed.
The dressing also has a semi-permeable backing film which provides a barrier while allowing moisture vapour transmission.
Unlike Biatain Ag Adhesive, the dressing does not have an adhesive border.
How to use:
Clean the wound using physiological saline or lukewarm water according to the recommended wound-care procedure.
Gently dry the surrounding skin.
Select a dressing large enough for the foam to overlap the wound margins. Manufacturer guidance recommends approximately:
- 2cm overlap around the wound for most sizes
- Around 1cm overlap when using smaller dressings
Remove the dressing aseptically from the sterile packaging.
Apply Biatain Ag Non-Adhesive with the plain, non-printed side directly towards the wound.
Do not touch the wound-contact surface unnecessarily during application.
Secure the dressing using an appropriate:
- Secondary dressing
- Fixation bandage
- Tubular bandage
- Compression system, where clinically indicated
Because Biatain Ag Non-Adhesive has no adhesive border, it must be appropriately secured in position.
Dressing change frequency:
Biatain Ag Non-Adhesive may remain in place for up to 7 days, depending on:
- Amount of wound exudate
- Condition of the dressing
- Condition of the wound
- Infection status
- Condition of the surrounding skin
- Clinical assessment
The dressing should be changed when clinically indicated or when visible wound exudate approaches the edge of the foam.
More frequent dressing changes may be required for highly exuding or infected wounds.

Important information:
Do not use Biatain Ag Non-Adhesive in patients with a known sensitivity or allergy to silver.
A healthcare professional should closely monitor:
- Clinically infected wounds
- Diabetic wounds
- Wounds caused wholly or partly by arterial insufficiency
Topical silver treatment does not replace systemic antimicrobial treatment or other appropriate infection management where this is clinically required.
Do not use the dressing with oxidising solutions such as hydrogen peroxide or hypochlorite solutions, as these may affect the dressing.
If other volatile wound-cleansing solutions are used, allow them to evaporate or dry completely before applying the dressing.
The dressing should be removed before:
- Radiation therapy
- X-ray examinations involving the dressing area
- Ultrasound treatment
- Diathermy
- Microwave treatment
Manufacturer information states that Biatain Ag is MR safe and compatible up to 3 Tesla.
Use during pregnancy, breastfeeding and in children has not been adequately established, so healthcare-professional advice should be obtained before use in these groups.
The use of Biatain Ag together with enzymatic debriding agents has not been established.
A temporary discolouration of the wound bed may occur because of the silver content. This can generally be removed by gentle cleansing.
Do not reuse or re-sterilise.
