DURAFIBER™ Ag PRO is a highly absorbent antimicrobial gelling fibre wound dressing containing silver and strengthening cellulose fibres, designed for the management of moderately to heavily exuding wounds where antimicrobial action is required.

The soft, conformable non-woven dressing is made from sodium carboxymethyl cellulose with strengthening cellulose fibres and antimicrobial silver.

When the dressing comes into contact with wound exudate, it absorbs fluid and forms a soft, cohesive gel. This helps maintain a moist wound-healing environment, retain wound exudate and debris within the dressing, and support comfortable removal.

DURAFIBER Ag PRO also has high wet tensile strength, helping the dressing remain intact when saturated so that it can generally be removed in one piece.

Antimicrobial silver

DURAFIBER Ag PRO contains antimicrobial silver within the dressing.

When wound exudate enters the dressing, the silver provides antimicrobial activity against bacteria retained within the dressing.

Smith+Nephew reports that DURAFIBER Ag PRO begins killing a broad range of pathogens, including MRSA, within 4 hours in laboratory testing.

Silver dressings are generally used where antimicrobial wound management is clinically indicated rather than simply as a routine dressing for every wound.

The need for continued antimicrobial treatment should therefore be regularly reassessed by an appropriate healthcare professional.

Gelling fibre technology

When DURAFIBER Ag PRO absorbs wound fluid, its fibres form a soft gel.

Gel formation helps:

• Absorb and retain wound exudate

• Maintain a moist wound environment

• Conform closely to the wound surface

• Retain wound debris within the dressing

• Retain bacteria contained within absorbed exudate

• Reduce movement of exudate within the wound

• Support autolytic wound-cleansing processes

High absorbency

DURAFIBER Ag PRO is designed for wounds producing moderate to high levels of exudate.

The dressing absorbs a high volume of wound fluid while transforming into a cohesive gel.

This makes it particularly appropriate for wounds where fluid management is an important part of the treatment plan.

The exact dressing-change frequency will depend on:

High wet strength

Cavity wounds should be filled loosely rather than tightly packed.

Overpacking can interfere with wound drainage and place unnecessary pressure on the wound bed.

A sufficient portion of the dressing should remain accessible for safe removal.

How to apply

Application should follow the wound-management plan and Smith+Nephew Instructions for Use.

In general:

1. Assess the wound and surrounding skin.

2. Cleanse the wound according to the prescribed wound-care protocol.

3. Select the appropriate DURAFIBER Ag PRO size.

4. Apply the dressing directly to the wound bed.

5. For deeper or cavity wounds, place the ribbon dressing loosely into the wound without overpacking.

6. Cover and secure with an appropriate secondary dressing.

7. Ensure the secondary dressing provides sufficient additional fluid management for the level of exudate.

8. Reassess the wound and dressing regularly.

DURAFIBER Ag PRO is not adhesive and normally requires an appropriate secondary dressing or fixation method.

Secondary dressing

A secondary dressing may be required to:

• Hold DURAFIBER Ag PRO securely in place

• Provide additional absorption

• Protect the wound

• Manage strike-through

• Maintain appropriate contact between the dressing and wound bed

The secondary dressing should be selected according to the amount of exudate and individual wound requirements.

Examples may include an appropriate absorbent foam dressing where clinically suitable.

Dressing changes

Change frequency depends on wound condition and the amount of exudate.

The dressing should be changed when clinically indicated, for example when:

• It approaches its absorbent capacity

• Exudate reaches or passes the secondary dressing

• Leakage occurs

• The dressing becomes displaced

• The wound requires reassessment

• Clinical circumstances require a change

The interval between dressing changes should not exceed 7 days.

Highly exuding wounds may require substantially more frequent dressing changes.

Removing the dressing

The cohesive gel and strengthening fibres are designed to support removal in one piece.

When removing:

1. Remove the secondary dressing.

2. Gently remove DURAFIBER Ag PRO using an appropriate technique.

3. If the dressing has adhered because wound exudate has reduced, it may be moistened with sterile 0.9% sodium chloride solution before removal.

4. Cleanse the wound according to the clinical treatment plan.

5. Ensure any residual gel is removed during wound cleansing.

6. Irrigate cavity wounds thoroughly where appropriate.

Avoid traumatic removal from the wound bed.

Use under compression

DURAFIBER Ag PRO may be used with an appropriate secondary dressing under compression therapy where clinically indicated, for example in the management of certain venous leg ulcers.

Compression should only be used where it has been clinically assessed as appropriate.
