EMLA® Cream 5% is a topical local anaesthetic cream used to temporarily numb the surface of the skin before certain medical procedures. It contains two local anaesthetics, lidocaine and prilocaine, which work together to reduce pain from procedures such as injections, vaccinations and blood tests.

EMLA® may also be used for certain other medical procedures, including genital procedures and cleansing of leg ulcers, but these uses should be carried out by or under the supervision of a healthcare professional.
Directions:
For minor procedures on intact skin, apply a thick layer of cream without rubbing it in and cover with an appropriate occlusive dressing. For many routine needle procedures, the cream is normally left in place for approximately 1 hour before the procedure.
The amount required and maximum application time vary according to age, procedure and area of skin being treated, so always follow the patient information leaflet carefully.
Important information:

Do not use if allergic to lidocaine, prilocaine or other amide-type local anaesthetics

Avoid contact with the eyes

Do not apply inside the ear where the eardrum may be damaged

Do not apply to open wounds except when specifically directed for leg-ulcer treatment

Special dosing restrictions apply to babies and young children

Extra caution is required in people with certain blood disorders, including methaemoglobinaemia

If you or your child has atopic dermatitis, a shorter application time may be required
