Calcium Resonium is a potassium-binding medicine containing calcium polystyrene sulfonate. It is used to treat hyperkalaemia, a condition where the level of potassium in the blood is too high. The medicine works in the gastrointestinal tract by exchanging calcium for potassium, allowing excess potassium to be removed from the body.

How to use:
Calcium Resonium should be used exactly as directed by a doctor or other healthcare professional. The dose is determined according to blood potassium and other electrolyte levels.
For adults, the usual oral dose is 15g three or four times daily, but individual doses may differ according to blood test results.
Mix each dose with a small amount of water or suitable syrup. Do not mix with fruit juice because many fruit juices contain potassium.
Take Calcium Resonium at least 3 hours before or 3 hours after other oral medicines. A separation of at least 6 hours may be required in people with gastroparesis.
Important information:
Treatment requires regular blood tests to monitor potassium, calcium, magnesium and other electrolyte levels.
Do not use if your blood potassium level is below 5mmol/L, if you have high calcium levels, obstructive bowel disease or an allergy to polystyrene sulfonate resins.
Calcium Resonium should not be taken together with sorbitol, as this combination has been associated with serious gastrointestinal complications including intestinal damage.
Stop treatment and seek prompt medical advice if you develop severe abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, abdominal swelling or rectal bleeding.
The medicine can cause potassium levels to become too low and calcium levels to become too high. Other possible side effects include nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhoea and stomach irritation.
Do not use magnesium-containing laxatives while taking Calcium Resonium unless specifically advised by a healthcare professional.
Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding is not generally advised unless a doctor considers the benefits to outweigh the potential risks.
Keep out of the sight and reach of children. Store in a dry place.
