Bard Spirit® Urine Drainage Leg Bag DSLB500S is a sterile 500ml leg-mounted urine drainage bag with a 10cm short inlet tube, designed for the collection of urine from a urinary catheter.

This Spirit® Leg Bag has a 500ml urine capacity.

A 500ml leg bag provides sufficient capacity for routine daytime drainage while remaining relatively compact when worn beneath clothing.

The bag should be emptied regularly rather than being allowed to become excessively full or heavy. Excessive weight can cause pulling on the catheter, tubing or fixation system and may increase discomfort.

10cm short inlet tube

The 10cm inlet tube is the short-tube version of the Bard Spirit® range.

Short inlet tubing is particularly useful when the leg bag is positioned relatively close to the catheter connection, commonly on the upper leg or thigh.

The tubing should follow a natural route from the catheter to the drainage bag without:

• Kinking

• Twisting

• Excessive loops

• Pulling on the catheter

• Becoming trapped beneath clothing

The drainage bag should remain below bladder level to allow effective gravity drainage.

FLIP-FLO® lever tap

The Spirit® Leg Bag incorporates a 180° FLIP-FLO® lever-action drainage tap.

The lever mechanism is designed to provide straightforward opening and closing when emptying the bag.

Its flat-profile design helps the outlet remain discreet beneath clothing and reduces unnecessary projection from the drainage bag.

Always ensure the drainage tap has been completely closed after emptying.

Universal connector

The bag incorporates a ridged universal connector designed to provide a secure connection to a compatible urinary catheter or drainage system.

The connection should be pushed together sufficiently to achieve a secure fit without using excessive force.

Avoid unnecessary disconnection of the urinary drainage system, as maintaining a closed drainage system is an important aspect of catheter care.

Needle-free sampling port

A needle-free sampling port is incorporated into the Spirit® Leg Bag.

This allows an appropriately trained healthcare professional to obtain a urine sample from the drainage system when clinically required without inserting a needle into the tubing.

Urine samples should be obtained using appropriate aseptic technique and according to local clinical procedures.

Leg bag straps

Leg straps are supplied to help secure the drainage bag to the leg.

The straps should hold the bag securely without being excessively tight.

Correct support is important because a full drainage bag becomes heavier and an inadequately supported bag may place unnecessary tension on the catheter.

Check that the straps:

• Hold the bag securely

• Do not restrict circulation

• Do not cause excessive pressure

• Do not allow the bag to pull on the catheter

• Keep the drainage tubing in an appropriate position

Overnight drainage

The Bard Spirit® system can be used with an appropriate compatible overnight urine drainage system where required.

When connecting an overnight drainage bag:

• Follow the manufacturer's instructions

• Keep the drainage system below bladder level

• Ensure tubing is not kinked or compressed

• Avoid pulling or tension on the catheter

• Ensure urine can drain freely

• Position the night bag securely so it cannot be accidentally pulled

Do not place the drainage bag directly on the floor.

Directions:

Wash and dry your hands before handling the catheter or drainage system.

Remove the sterile leg bag from its packaging.

Position the bag appropriately on the leg and attach the supplied straps.

Ensure the FLIP-FLO® drainage tap is closed.

Remove the protective cap from the connector without touching the connection surface unnecessarily.

Connect the leg bag securely to the urinary catheter according to the catheter and drainage-system instructions.

Position the bag below bladder level.

Ensure the 10cm inlet tubing runs freely without kinks, twisting or excessive tension.

Check that urine is able to drain into the bag.

Emptying the bag:

Empty the leg bag regularly and before it becomes excessively full or heavy.

Wash your hands.

Position the drainage outlet over a toilet or suitable receptacle.

Operate the FLIP-FLO® lever tap to open the drainage outlet.

Allow the urine to drain from the bag.

Avoid allowing the outlet to touch the toilet or receptacle.

Close the lever tap completely after emptying.

Wipe the outlet if required according to your normal catheter-care instructions.

Wash your hands after completing the procedure.

Changing the leg bag:

Urinary drainage bags should be changed according to the manufacturer's instructions and the individual's catheter-care plan.

Avoid disconnecting the drainage system unnecessarily.

When changing the bag:

• Wash and dry your hands

• Prepare the replacement sterile bag before disconnecting the existing bag

• Avoid touching catheter and drainage-system connection surfaces

• Establish the new connection promptly

• Make sure the drainage tap is closed

• Check that urine drains freely following reconnection

• Dispose of the used drainage bag appropriately
