ALLEVYN Ag Heel Non-Adhesive Dressing – 10.5cm × 13.5cm – Box of 5
ALLEVYN Ag Heel is a sterile, anatomically shaped antimicrobial hydrocellular foam dressing containing silver sulfadiazine (SSD), specifically designed for the management of exuding wounds around the heel where infection is present or antimicrobial protection is clinically required.
Its contoured, cup-shaped design conforms around the heel and other difficult-to-dress areas, while the absorbent hydrocellular foam helps manage wound exudate and maintain a moist wound-healing environment. The silver sulfadiazine provides broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against microorganisms within the dressing and wound environment.
Key features:
- Antimicrobial silver-containing foam dressing
- Contains silver sulfadiazine (SSD)
- Specifically shaped for the heel
- Suitable for difficult-to-dress and contoured areas
- Broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity
- Helps protect the wound against microbial contamination
- Highly absorbent hydrocellular polyurethane foam
- Suitable for moderately to heavily exuding wounds
- Helps absorb and retain wound exudate
- Helps maintain a moist wound-healing environment
- Helps reduce the risk of peri-wound maceration
- Provides cushioning and protection around the heel
- Non-adherent wound-contact layer
- Non-adhesive dressing
- Breathable, waterproof outer film
- Can be cut to fit where clinically appropriate
- Can remain in place for up to 7 days, depending on wound condition and exudate
- Sterile
- Single use
Suitable for:
ALLEVYN Ag Heel is indicated for the management by secondary intention of acute and chronic, partial- or full-thickness, shallow, granulating and exuding wounds, particularly wounds located around the heel.
Suitable wound types include:
- Heel pressure ulcers
- Diabetic foot and heel ulcers
- Venous ulcers
- Surgical wounds
- Surgically dehisced wounds
- Burns
- Donor sites
- Fungating or malignant wounds
- Other exuding heel wounds
- Infected wounds where antimicrobial management is clinically appropriate
ALLEVYN Ag Heel is particularly intended for wounds showing signs and symptoms of infection. Where an infected wound is being treated, the underlying infection should also be managed according to the appropriate local clinical protocol.
Composition:
ALLEVYN Ag Heel has a three-layer construction consisting of:
- A perforated non-adherent wound-contact layer
- A highly absorbent hydrocellular polyurethane foam core containing silver sulfadiazine
- A breathable, waterproof outer film
The hydrocellular foam absorbs wound exudate while helping maintain an appropriately moist environment at the wound surface.
Silver sulfadiazine within the foam provides antimicrobial activity against microorganisms present within the dressing and wound environment.
How to use:
Cleanse the wound according to the recommended wound-care protocol.
Gently clean and dry the surrounding skin.
Remove ALLEVYN Ag Heel from its sterile packaging using a clean or aseptic technique.
Apply the white wound-contact surface directly to the wound, ensuring that the dressing is positioned comfortably around the heel and maintains good contact with the wound surface.
Because ALLEVYN Ag Heel is non-adhesive, secure it with an appropriate:
- Dressing retention sheet
- Fixation tape
- Bandage
- Other suitable retention system
The dressing should not be applied too tightly around the foot or heel.
ALLEVYN Ag Heel may also be used under an appropriate compression system where clinically indicated.
Dressing change frequency:
ALLEVYN Ag Heel may remain in place for up to 7 days, depending on:
- Amount of wound exudate
- Condition of the wound
- Infection status
- Condition of the surrounding skin
- Dressing integrity
- Clinical assessment
The dressing should be changed earlier if exudate becomes visible and approaches approximately 1.5cm from the edge of the dressing, or if leakage, deterioration or another clinical indication for dressing change occurs.
During the early stages of treatment, and particularly when treating an infected wound, the wound should be inspected regularly according to the appropriate clinical protocol.
Important information:
Do not use ALLEVYN Ag Heel in people with a known hypersensitivity to silver sulfadiazine or sulfonamides.
Because silver sulfadiazine contains a sulfonamide, Smith+Nephew advises that ALLEVYN Ag should not be used:
- In premature infants
- In newborn infants during the first months of life
- In women at or near term pregnancy
- During breastfeeding
These restrictions relate to the potential risk of kernicterus associated with sulfonamides.
Do not use the dressing with oxidising agents such as hydrogen peroxide or hypochlorite solutions, as these may damage the polyurethane foam and affect dressing performance.
Where clinically significant infection is present, a silver dressing does not replace systemic antimicrobial treatment or other appropriate infection management when this is required.
ALLEVYN Ag Heel provides wound protection and cushioning but should not be regarded as a pressure-relieving device. Appropriate pressure redistribution and off-loading remain essential in the management of heel pressure injuries and diabetic foot wounds.
Do not reuse or re-sterilise.
Do not use if the sterile packaging is damaged or already open.
