ALLEVYN™ Gentle Border Foam Dressings
ALLEVYN Gentle Border is a sterile absorbent hydrocellular foam dressing with a gentle silicone adhesive border, designed for the management of a wide range of exuding acute and chronic wounds.
The dressing combines a highly absorbent hydrocellular polyurethane foam core, a gentle silicone wound-contact layer and a breathable, showerproof outer film. It absorbs and retains wound exudate while helping to maintain a moist wound environment conducive to healing.
The soft silicone adhesive helps keep the dressing securely in place while minimising pain and trauma during dressing changes, making ALLEVYN Gentle Border particularly suitable for people with fragile or sensitive skin.
Key features:
- Highly absorbent hydrocellular foam dressing
- Gentle silicone adhesive wound-contact layer
- Suitable for fragile and sensitive skin
- Helps minimise pain and trauma during dressing removal
- Absorbs and retains wound exudate
- Helps maintain a moist wound-healing environment
- Breathable outer film
- Showerproof
- Outer film provides a bacterial barrier while the dressing remains intact
- Multi-way stretch for improved conformability
- Conforms to body contours and awkward anatomical areas
- Suitable for a wide range of acute and chronic exuding wounds
- Can be cut to size without shedding
- Available in standard, rectangular, heel, sacral and multisite shapes
- Can remain in place for up to 7 days, depending on wound condition and exudate
- Sacral versions may remain in place for up to 5 days
- May be used as part of a pressure injury prevention protocol
- Sterile
- Single use
Suitable for:
ALLEVYN Gentle Border is indicated for the management of shallow, granulating, acute and chronic exuding wounds and partial- or full-thickness wounds, including:
- Pressure ulcers
- Leg ulcers
- Diabetic foot ulcers
- Surgical wounds
- Skin tears
- Donor sites
- Fungating wounds
- First- and second-degree burns
- Other exuding acute and chronic wounds
It may also be used on infected wounds where appropriate, provided the infection is assessed and treated according to an appropriate clinical protocol.
ALLEVYN Gentle Border may also be used on intact skin as part of a comprehensive pressure injury prevention programme, including the prevention of pressure injuries associated with medical devices.
Composition:
ALLEVYN Gentle Border has a multilayer construction incorporating:
- A gentle silicone adhesive wound-contact layer
- A highly absorbent hydrocellular polyurethane foam core
- A breathable, showerproof outer film
The foam absorbs wound exudate while the breathable film allows moisture vapour to escape, helping maintain an appropriate balance of moisture within the dressing.
The silicone contact layer provides gentle adherence to the surrounding skin while helping minimise trauma to the wound and peri-wound skin during dressing changes.
How to use:
Cleanse the wound according to the recommended wound-care procedure.
Prepare and dry the surrounding skin. Remove excess hair if necessary to ensure good dressing contact.
Select an appropriately sized ALLEVYN Gentle Border dressing. The absorbent pad should completely cover the wound with an adequate margin around the wound.
Remove the dressing from the sterile pouch.
Remove the protective release material and apply the dressing with the silicone adhesive side towards the wound.
Position the absorbent pad centrally over the wound and gently smooth the adhesive border onto the surrounding skin.
Do not stretch the dressing during application.
ALLEVYN Gentle Border can be cut to fit difficult anatomical areas if necessary. However, cutting the dressing compromises the bacterial barrier and showerproof properties of the cut edges. Any exposed foam edges should therefore be covered with an appropriate film dressing without completely occluding the dressing.
Dressing change frequency:
ALLEVYN Gentle Border may remain in place for up to 7 days, depending on:
- Amount of wound exudate
- Condition of the wound
- Condition of the surrounding skin
- Dressing integrity
- Clinical assessment
The dressing should be changed earlier when wound exudate approaches approximately 0.5cm from the edge of the absorbent dressing pad.
For ALLEVYN Gentle Border Sacrum, the maximum recommended wear time is up to 5 days.
During the early stages of wound management or when treating infected wounds, more frequent inspection may be required.
To remove the dressing, gently lift one corner and slowly peel the dressing back from the skin until completely removed.

Important information:
Do not use ALLEVYN Gentle Border with oxidising agents such as hydrogen peroxide or hypochlorite solutions, as these can damage the absorbent polyurethane foam and reduce dressing performance.
If redness, irritation or sensitisation occurs, discontinue use and seek appropriate healthcare-professional advice.
Do not use the dressing to secure medical devices to the patient.
When used beneath medical devices around the nose or mouth, care should be taken because moisture accumulation may reduce adhesion and cause the dressing to move.
Although ALLEVYN Gentle Border can be cut, doing so compromises the bacterial barrier and showerproof properties at the cut edge.
The dressing is showerproof but should not be immersed in water.
Use of ALLEVYN Gentle Border for pressure injury prevention does not replace established preventive measures such as:
- Regular repositioning
- Appropriate pressure-relieving surfaces
- Skin assessment
- Appropriate skin care
- Management of moisture and other pressure-injury risk factors
Do not reuse. Reuse may result in cross-contamination, infection or reduced dressing performance.
Do not use if the sterile packaging is damaged or already open.
