Coloplast Assura® 2474 is a one-piece closed colostomy pouch with a Midi pouch size, clear pouch and pre-cut 25mm stoma opening, designed primarily for people with a colostomy producing formed or relatively predictable output.

The adhesive skin barrier and pouch are permanently joined, creating a complete one-piece ostomy appliance. When the pouch needs changing, the whole appliance is removed and replaced.

Assura® incorporates Coloplast's spiral adhesive technology, designed to combine secure adhesion with moisture absorption to help protect the skin surrounding the stoma.

The pouch also incorporates an integrated filter, soft backing and odour-resistant pouch film to support comfortable and discreet everyday colostomy management.

One-piece system

Assura® 2474 is a one-piece ostomy appliance.

The adhesive skin barrier and pouch are permanently attached.

This means:

• There is no separate baseplate

• There is no mechanical coupling ring

• The pouch cannot be detached while leaving the adhesive in place

• The complete appliance is removed and replaced during a pouch change

One-piece systems generally provide a low-profile appliance with fewer separate components.

For users who prefer to leave the baseplate attached while changing only the pouch, a compatible two-piece ostomy system may be more appropriate.

Closed pouch

Reference 2474 is a closed pouch.

It does not have a drainage outlet and is therefore not designed to be emptied and reused.

When the pouch requires changing, the complete appliance is removed and replaced.

Closed pouches are particularly suitable for people whose stoma output is:

• Formed

• Semi-formed

• Relatively predictable

• Produced at manageable intervals

They are therefore most commonly associated with colostomy.

For frequent liquid or semi-liquid output, such as is commonly produced by an ileostomy, a drainable pouch will generally be more practical.

Pre-cut 25mm opening

Reference 2474 has a ready-cut 25mm opening.

The opening has already been manufactured to the correct diameter and does not require manual cutting before application.

This can make appliance preparation simpler for users whose stoma has reached a stable and consistent size.

The 25mm opening should fit closely around the stoma without rubbing, touching or constricting it.

A pre-cut pouch should only be selected where the stoma size is appropriate for the manufactured opening.

Choosing the correct opening size:

Measure the stoma using an appropriate stoma measuring guide.

Reference 2474 should be selected where a 25mm ready-cut opening provides an appropriate fit.

The opening should:

• Sit closely around the stoma

• Avoid constricting the stoma

• Minimise exposed skin

• Avoid leaving a significant gap between the stoma and adhesive

An opening that is too large may allow stoma output to contact the surrounding skin and increase the risk of irritation or leakage.

An opening that is too small may rub against or constrict the stoma.

If the stoma is not approximately 25mm, another Assura® size or an appropriate cut-to-fit appliance should be selected.

Assura® spiral adhesive

Assura® uses Coloplast's spiral adhesive system.

The adhesive combines materials with different functional properties within a spiral structure.

It is designed to provide:

• Secure adhesion

• Absorption of moisture from the skin

• Protection of the peristomal area

• Flexibility during normal body movement

• Reliable contact between the appliance and surrounding skin

Managing moisture around the stoma is important because excessive moisture can interfere with adhesion and contribute to skin irritation.

The appliance should always be applied to appropriately clean and dry skin.

Integrated filter

Assura® 2474 incorporates an integrated filter.

Gas naturally produced by the bowel can collect inside a closed ostomy pouch and cause it to inflate or balloon.

The filter is designed to:

• Allow gas to escape gradually

• Help reduce ballooning

• Help maintain a flatter pouch profile

• Filter odour before gas is released

• Improve discretion during wear

Do not deliberately puncture, cut or modify the filter.

Clear pouch

Reference 2474 is the Clear version of the Assura® Midi closed pouch.

A clear pouch allows the user, carer or healthcare professional to see:

• The stoma

• Pouch contents

• Output characteristics

• The position of the appliance

This can be useful where direct visibility is preferred or where the stoma and output need to be monitored.

Users who prefer the pouch contents to be concealed may prefer the corresponding opaque Assura® Midi closed pouch range.

Midi pouch size

Reference 2474 is a Midi-sized pouch.

Midi provides a balance between collection capacity and discretion.

The appropriate pouch size depends on factors including:

• Amount of stoma output

• Frequency of output

• Individual body size

• Clothing

• Lifestyle

• Personal preference

The pouch should be replaced before it becomes excessively full or heavy.

Soft backing

The pouch incorporates a soft backing material on the body-facing surface.

This provides a softer interface between the pouch and the skin than exposed pouch film alone.

The backing is designed to help improve:

• Comfort during prolonged wear

• Discretion

• Noise reduction

• Contact against the body

The skin beneath and around the pouch should still be checked regularly for irritation.

Directions:

Wash and dry your hands before changing the appliance.

Measure the stoma periodically to confirm that the 25mm pre-cut opening remains appropriate.

Gently remove the existing pouch while supporting the surrounding skin.

Clean the skin around the stoma according to the normal stoma-care routine.

Ensure the skin is appropriately clean and dry.

Remove the protective backing from the Assura® adhesive.

Centre the 25mm opening carefully over the stoma.

Apply the adhesive around the stoma.

Press gently but firmly against the skin.

Smooth the adhesive outward to establish complete contact.

Check around the entire adhesive for:

• Gaps

• Folds

• Creases

• Areas where the adhesive has not made full contact

Apply gentle hand pressure to help establish a secure seal.

Changing the pouch:

Because this is a closed pouch, the appliance is removed and discarded when it requires changing rather than being emptied.

Change the pouch before it becomes excessively full or heavy.

To remove:

Wash and dry your hands.

Gently lift an edge of the adhesive.

Support the surrounding skin while slowly peeling the appliance away.

Avoid pulling the pouch rapidly from the skin.

Dispose of the used appliance appropriately.

Clean and inspect the peristomal skin before applying a new pouch.

Checking the skin

Inspect the skin around the stoma at each pouch change.

Look for:

• Redness

• Soreness

• Broken skin

• Moisture damage

• Signs of leakage

• Persistent itching or discomfort

Healthy peristomal skin should generally resemble the surrounding abdominal skin.

Persistent skin problems or repeated leakage can indicate that the pouch opening, adhesive system or appliance profile is not providing an appropriate fit.
