Coloplast Assura® 2489 is a one-piece closed colostomy pouch with a Maxi pouch size, clear pouch and pre-cut 50mm stoma opening, designed primarily for people with a colostomy producing formed or relatively predictable output.

The pouch and adhesive skin barrier are permanently joined, forming a complete one-piece ostomy appliance. When the pouch requires changing, the entire appliance is removed and replaced.

Assura® incorporates Coloplast's spiral adhesive system, designed to combine secure adhesion with moisture absorption to help protect the skin surrounding the stoma.

Reference 2489 also incorporates an integrated filter and soft backing, helping provide comfortable and discreet everyday colostomy management.

One-piece system

Assura® 2489 is a one-piece ostomy appliance.

The pouch and adhesive skin barrier are permanently attached.

This means:

• There is no separate baseplate

• There is no pouch-to-baseplate coupling

• The pouch cannot be removed while leaving the adhesive attached

• The complete appliance is removed and replaced during each pouch change

A one-piece system provides a relatively low-profile appliance with fewer separate components.

Closed pouch

Reference 2489 is a closed pouch.

It does not have a drainage outlet and is designed to be removed and replaced rather than emptied.

Closed pouches are particularly suitable where stoma output is:

• Formed

• Semi-formed

• Relatively predictable

• Produced at manageable intervals

They are therefore most commonly used by people with a colostomy.

For frequent liquid or semi-liquid output, a drainable appliance will generally be more practical.

Maxi pouch size

Reference 2489 is the Maxi version of the Assura® closed pouch.

The larger pouch capacity may be useful for users who:

• Produce a greater volume of output

• Prefer additional collection capacity

• Require more capacity than a Midi pouch provides

• Prefer fewer pouch changes where clinically appropriate

The pouch should still be replaced before it becomes excessively full or heavy.

Excessive pouch weight can increase pulling on the adhesive and reduce comfort and discretion.

Pre-cut 50mm opening

Reference 2489 has a ready-cut 50mm stoma opening.

The opening is manufactured at a fixed diameter and does not require manual cutting before application.

This makes it particularly convenient where the stoma has reached a stable size and a 50mm opening provides an appropriate fit.

The 50mm measurement refers to the opening around the stoma.

It is not a flange or coupling measurement because this is a one-piece appliance.

Choosing the correct size:

Measure the stoma using an appropriate stoma measuring guide.

Reference 2489 should only be selected where a 50mm pre-cut opening provides an appropriate fit.

The opening should:

• Fit closely around the stoma

• Avoid rubbing against the stoma

• Avoid constricting the stoma

• Minimise exposed peristomal skin

An opening that is too large may expose surrounding skin to stoma output and increase the risk of irritation or leakage.

An opening that is too small may rub against or constrict the stoma.

If 50mm is not an appropriate fit, select another pre-cut size or an appropriate cut-to-fit Assura® appliance.

Assura® spiral adhesive

Assura® uses Coloplast's spiral adhesive technology.

The adhesive combines materials with different properties in a spiral structure to provide:

• Secure adhesion

• Absorption of moisture from the skin

• Protection of the peristomal area

• Flexibility during normal body movement

Managing moisture around the stoma helps maintain adhesion and supports healthy peristomal skin.

The adhesive should be applied to appropriately clean and dry skin.

Integrated filter

Assura® 2489 incorporates an integrated filter.

Gas produced by the bowel can accumulate inside a closed colostomy pouch and cause ballooning.

The filter is designed to:

• Allow gas to escape gradually

• Help reduce pouch ballooning

• Filter odour before gas is released

• Help maintain a flatter pouch profile

• Improve discretion during wear

Do not puncture, cut or otherwise modify the filter.

Clear pouch

Reference 2489 is the Clear version.

The transparent pouch allows visibility of:

• The stoma

• Pouch contents

• Stoma output

• Appliance positioning

This can be useful where the user, carer or healthcare professional prefers direct visibility of the stoma and output.

For users who prefer greater concealment of pouch contents, opaque Assura® closed-pouch variants are also available.

Soft backing

The body-facing side of the pouch incorporates a soft backing material.

This provides a more comfortable surface between the pouch and the skin than exposed plastic film alone.

The soft backing is designed to help improve:

• Comfort

• Discretion

• Noise reduction during movement

• Everyday wear

The pouch film itself is designed to be odour-proof.

Directions:

Wash and dry your hands before changing the appliance.

Measure the stoma periodically to ensure the 50mm pre-cut opening remains appropriate.

Gently remove the existing appliance while supporting the surrounding skin.

Clean the skin around the stoma according to the normal stoma-care routine.

Ensure the peristomal skin is appropriately clean and dry.

Remove the protective backing from the Assura® adhesive.

Centre the 50mm pre-cut opening carefully over the stoma.

Apply the adhesive around the stoma.

Press gently but firmly against the skin.

Smooth the adhesive outward to establish complete contact.

Check around the complete adhesive area for:

• Gaps

• Folds

• Creases

• Areas where the adhesive has not made secure contact

Apply gentle hand pressure over the adhesive to help establish a secure seal.

Changing the pouch:

Because this is a closed pouch, the appliance is removed and discarded rather than emptied.

Replace the pouch before it becomes excessively full or heavy.

To remove:

Wash and dry your hands.

Gently lift an edge of the adhesive.

Support the surrounding skin while slowly peeling the appliance away.

Avoid pulling the appliance rapidly from the skin.

Dispose of the used pouch appropriately.

Clean and inspect the skin before applying a new appliance.

Checking the skin

Check the skin surrounding the stoma during every appliance change.

Look for:

• Redness

• Soreness

• Broken skin

• Moisture damage

• Persistent itching

• Signs of leakage beneath the adhesive

Persistent leakage or skin irritation may indicate that the 50mm opening or appliance profile is not providing an appropriate fit.

The stoma should be remeasured if its size or shape changes.
