Coloplast Assura® 2724 is a two-piece closed colostomy pouch with a Mini pouch size, opaque covering and 40mm mechanical coupling, designed primarily for people with a colostomy producing formed or relatively predictable output.

The pouch is used with a separate compatible 40mm Assura® baseplate. Unlike a one-piece appliance, the adhesive baseplate can remain attached to the skin while the pouch is removed and replaced independently.

The Assura® mechanical coupling provides a secure connection between the pouch and baseplate, while the closed pouch format is designed to be removed and replaced rather than emptied.

The compact Mini size is particularly suitable where a smaller, discreet pouch is preferred.

Two-piece system

Assura® 2724 forms part of a two-piece ostomy system.

The complete system consists of:

• A separate adhesive baseplate

• A removable closed pouch

The baseplate adheres around the stoma while the pouch connects to it using the Assura® mechanical coupling.

This allows the pouch to be removed independently while the adhesive baseplate remains on the skin, provided the baseplate continues to provide an appropriate and secure seal.

This can be useful where:

• The pouch requires changing more frequently than the baseplate

• The user prefers to minimise repeated adhesive removal

• Different compatible pouches need to be used with the same baseplate

The baseplate is not included with this product and must be purchased separately if required.

40mm coupling size

The 40mm measurement refers to the coupling between the pouch and baseplate.

It is not the diameter of the stoma opening.

Reference 2724 must be paired with a compatible 40mm Assura® baseplate.

The actual opening around the stoma is determined by the baseplate selected and prepared according to the measured stoma size.

A compatible Assura® 40mm baseplate may accommodate a range of stoma opening sizes depending on the particular baseplate selected.

Always match:

• With a 40mm Assura® baseplate coupling

A 40mm pouch should not be connected to a 50mm or 60mm baseplate.

Mini pouch size

Reference 2724 is the Mini pouch within the Assura® two-piece closed range.

The smaller pouch profile may be particularly suitable for users who:

• Produce relatively small or predictable volumes of output

• Prefer a smaller appliance beneath clothing

• Want a discreet pouch profile

• Change closed pouches relatively frequently

Pouch capacity should be selected according to individual output, lifestyle and personal preference.

The pouch should be replaced before becoming excessively full or heavy.

Closed pouch

Assura® 2724 is a closed pouch.

There is no drainage outlet.

Instead of emptying the pouch, it is detached from the baseplate and replaced with a new pouch when required.

Closed pouches are generally most appropriate where stoma output is:

• Formed

• Semi-formed

• Relatively predictable

• Produced at manageable intervals

They are therefore commonly used for colostomy.

For frequent liquid or semi-liquid output, a drainable ostomy pouch will generally be more practical.

Mechanical coupling

The Assura® two-piece system uses a mechanical pouch-to-baseplate coupling.

The pouch is positioned over the compatible coupling ring and secured to the baseplate.

The mechanical connection allows the user to:

• Attach the pouch securely

• Remove the pouch without removing the baseplate

• Position the pouch appropriately before use

• Change the pouch independently of the adhesive barrier

After attaching the pouch, check the complete circumference of the coupling to ensure it is fully and evenly engaged.

Integrated filter

The Assura® closed pouch incorporates an integrated filter to help manage gas produced by the bowel.

Gas can otherwise accumulate inside a closed pouch and cause ballooning.

The filter helps:

• Allow gas to escape gradually

• Reduce pouch inflation

• Help control odour

• Maintain a flatter pouch profile

• Improve discretion

Do not puncture, cut or otherwise modify the filter.

Opaque pouch

Reference 2724 is the Opaque version.

The covering conceals the pouch contents during normal wear, providing greater discretion than a clear pouch.

The soft covering also provides a more comfortable surface against the body and helps reduce direct contact between the skin and pouch film.

Choosing the correct baseplate

The pouch itself does not determine the size of the opening around the stoma.

A compatible 40mm Assura® baseplate must be selected separately.

Baseplate selection depends on:

• Stoma diameter

• Stoma shape

• Peristomal skin condition

• Abdominal contours

• Required cut-to-fit range

• Whether flat or convex support is required

The prepared baseplate opening should fit closely around the stoma without touching or constricting it.

An opening that is too large can expose the surrounding skin to stoma output and increase the risk of irritation or leakage.

An opening that is too small can rub against or constrict the stoma.

Flat or convex baseplate?

The pouch itself does not provide convexity.

The profile of the appliance is determined by the Assura® baseplate selected.

A flat baseplate may be suitable where the stoma protrudes adequately and the surrounding abdominal surface provides a good sealing area.

A convex solution may be considered where the stoma is:

• Flush with the skin

• Retracted

• Located within a dip

• Situated within folds or uneven contours

• Associated with recurrent leakage when using a flat appliance

Convexity should be selected following an appropriate stoma assessment.

Attaching the pouch:

Ensure the compatible 40mm Assura® baseplate has been correctly applied around the stoma.

Check that the coupling ring is clean.

Position the pouch over the baseplate coupling.

Press the pouch and baseplate coupling together according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Check around the complete circumference to make sure the connection is secure.

Gently check that the pouch is firmly attached before repositioning clothing.

Changing the pouch:

Because this is a closed pouch, it should be replaced rather than emptied.

Wash and dry your hands.

Detach the used pouch from the baseplate according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Dispose of the used pouch appropriately.

Check the exposed baseplate for:

• Leakage

• Lifting

• Damage

• Output beneath the adhesive

• Deterioration of the seal

If the baseplate remains secure and appropriate to continue wearing, attach a new compatible 40mm pouch.

If the baseplate seal has deteriorated or leakage is present, change the baseplate as well.

Changing the baseplate:

The baseplate should be replaced according to the manufacturer's instructions and the individual's established stoma-care routine.

Replace it sooner if:

• Leakage occurs

• The adhesive begins lifting

• Output reaches beneath the barrier

• Peristomal skin becomes sore

• The appliance no longer feels secure

• The baseplate becomes damaged

Persistent leakage should prompt reassessment of the baseplate opening and overall appliance fit.

• Significant changes in stoma colour, marked swelling, severe abdominal pain or other concerning symptoms require appropriate clinical assessment
