Coloplast Assura® 2784 is a two-piece closed colostomy pouch with a Maxi pouch size, clear construction and 40mm mechanical coupling, designed primarily for people with a colostomy producing formed or relatively predictable output.

The pouch is designed for use with a separate compatible 40mm Assura® baseplate. The adhesive baseplate remains attached around the stoma while the pouch can be removed and replaced independently.

Assura® uses a mechanical coupling system that securely connects the pouch to the baseplate. An audible click helps confirm that the pouch has been correctly locked into position.

The clear pouch allows the stoma and pouch contents to remain visible, while the larger Maxi capacity provides additional collection space compared with Midi or Mini pouch options.

Two-piece system

Assura® 2784 forms part of a two-piece ostomy system.

The complete appliance consists of:

• A separate adhesive baseplate

• A removable closed pouch

The baseplate adheres to the skin around the stoma, while the pouch connects mechanically to the coupling ring on the baseplate.

Unlike a one-piece appliance, the pouch can therefore be removed and replaced while the adhesive baseplate remains attached, provided the baseplate continues to provide a secure and appropriate seal.

This can be useful where:

• Closed pouches need changing more frequently than the baseplate

• Repeated removal of adhesive from the skin is undesirable

• The user prefers a modular pouch and baseplate system

• Different compatible pouches are used with the same baseplate

The baseplate is not included with this product and must be purchased separately if required.

40mm coupling size

The 40mm measurement refers to the mechanical coupling between the pouch and Assura® baseplate.

It does not mean the stoma itself measures 40mm.

Reference 2784 must be paired with a compatible 40mm Assura® baseplate.

The actual opening around the stoma is determined separately by the baseplate selected.

A 40mm coupling baseplate may have a smaller pre-cut or cut-to-fit stoma opening within the coupling ring.

Always match:

• With a 40mm Assura® baseplate coupling

A 40mm pouch should not be connected to a 50mm or 60mm baseplate.

Mechanical coupling

Assura® uses a mechanical coupling system to connect the pouch to the baseplate.

The pouch is positioned over the coupling ring and secured into place.

An audible click helps confirm that the pouch has been correctly locked onto the baseplate.

Before locking, the pouch can be rotated into the preferred position without removing it from the baseplate.

This allows the pouch to be positioned according to:

• Clothing

• Body shape

• Sitting position

• Sleeping position

• Personal preference

After attaching the pouch, check around the complete coupling to ensure it is fully engaged.

Maxi pouch size

Reference 2784 is the Maxi version of the Assura® closed pouch.

The larger capacity may be particularly useful for users who:

• Produce a greater volume of output

• Require more capacity than a Midi pouch provides

• Prefer additional collection space

• Want to reduce the frequency of pouch changes where appropriate

The pouch should nevertheless be replaced before it becomes excessively full or heavy.

Excessive pouch weight can:

• Pull on the baseplate

• Increase pressure on the coupling

• Reduce discretion

• Reduce comfort

• Increase the risk of accidental detachment or leakage

Closed pouch

Assura® 2784 is a closed pouch.

It does not have a drainage outlet.

When the pouch requires changing, it is removed from the baseplate and replaced with a new pouch rather than being emptied.

Closed pouches are generally most suitable where stoma output is:

• Formed

• Semi-formed

• Relatively predictable

• Produced at manageable intervals

They are therefore primarily used for colostomy.

For frequent liquid or semi-liquid output, such as typical ileostomy output, a drainable pouch is generally more practical.

Clear pouch

Reference 2784 is the Clear version of the Assura® Maxi closed pouch.

The transparent construction allows visibility of:

• The stoma

• Pouch contents

• Output consistency

• Appliance positioning

This may be useful:

• Following surgery

• When monitoring the stoma

• When assessing output

• For carers assisting with stoma care

• Where a clear pouch is simply preferred

For users who prefer the pouch contents to be concealed, the corresponding Maxi Opaque 40mm version is Ref 2814.

Integrated filter

The pouch incorporates an integrated filter.

Gas produced by the bowel can collect inside a closed pouch and cause it to inflate or balloon.

The filter helps:

• Allow gas to escape gradually

• Reduce pouch ballooning

• Filter odour before gas is released

• Maintain a flatter pouch profile

• Improve discretion during wear

Do not puncture, cut or modify the filter.

Soft backing

The body-facing side of the pouch incorporates a soft backing material.

This provides a softer surface between the pouch and the body than exposed plastic film alone.

The backing helps improve:

• Comfort during wear

• Discretion

• Noise reduction

• Contact against the skin

Choosing the correct baseplate

Reference 2784 is the pouch only.

A compatible 40mm Assura® baseplate must be selected separately.

Baseplate choice depends on factors including:

• Stoma diameter

• Stoma shape

• Peristomal skin condition

• Abdominal contours

• Whether a pre-cut or cut-to-fit opening is required

• Whether flat or convex support is appropriate

The opening within the baseplate should fit closely around the stoma without rubbing against or constricting it.

An opening that is too large can expose surrounding skin to stoma output and increase the risk of leakage or skin irritation.

An opening that is too small may rub against or constrict the stoma.

Flat or convex baseplate?

The pouch itself does not provide convexity.

Any flat or convex profile is determined by the Assura® baseplate selected.

A flat baseplate may be suitable where the stoma protrudes adequately and the surrounding abdominal surface provides a suitable sealing area.

A convex baseplate may be considered where the stoma is:

• Flush with the skin

• Retracted

• Situated within a dip

• Located within folds or uneven abdominal contours

• Associated with recurrent leakage using a flat appliance

Convexity should be selected following appropriate stoma assessment.

Attaching the pouch:

Ensure that a compatible 40mm Assura® baseplate has been correctly applied.

Check that the coupling ring is clean and unobstructed.

Position the pouch over the baseplate coupling.

Rotate the pouch into the preferred position if required.

Secure the pouch according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Listen for the audible click confirming that the pouch is locked.

Check around the complete circumference of the coupling.

Gently check that the pouch is securely attached before repositioning clothing.

Changing the pouch:

Because this is a closed pouch, it is replaced rather than emptied.

Wash and dry your hands.

Release the mechanical coupling according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Carefully remove the used pouch from the baseplate.

Dispose of the used pouch appropriately.

Check the existing baseplate for:

• Leakage

• Lifting

• Output beneath the adhesive

• Damage

• Deterioration of the seal

If the baseplate remains secure and appropriate to continue wearing, attach a new 40mm Assura® pouch.

If leakage or adhesive failure is present, replace the baseplate as well.

Changing the baseplate:

Replace the Assura® baseplate according to the manufacturer's instructions and the individual's established stoma-care routine.

Change it sooner if:

• Leakage occurs

• The adhesive begins lifting

• Output reaches beneath the barrier

• Peristomal skin becomes sore

• The baseplate becomes damaged

• The appliance no longer feels secure

Persistent leakage should prompt reassessment of the baseplate opening, convexity and overall appliance fit rather than simply changing the pouch more frequently.
