Coloplast Assura® 2794 is a two-piece drainable ileostomy pouch with a Maxi pouch size, clear construction and 40mm mechanical coupling, designed for people with an ileostomy or another stoma producing liquid or semi-liquid output.

The pouch is used with a separate compatible 40mm Assura® baseplate, allowing the adhesive baseplate to remain attached around the stoma while the pouch can be removed, repositioned or replaced independently.

The Assura® mechanical coupling provides a secure pouch-to-baseplate connection. An audible click confirms that the pouch has been correctly locked into position, and the pouch can be rotated before locking to achieve the preferred orientation.

The drainable outlet allows the pouch to be emptied repeatedly throughout the day, while the clear pouch provides visibility of the stoma and output.

Two-piece system

Assura® 2794 forms part of a two-piece ostomy system.

The complete appliance consists of:

• A separate adhesive baseplate

• A removable drainable pouch

The baseplate adheres to the skin around the stoma while the pouch attaches mechanically to the baseplate.

Unlike a one-piece appliance, the pouch can be removed without automatically removing the adhesive barrier.

This allows the pouch to be:

• Emptied while attached

• Removed independently

• Replaced without changing the baseplate every time

• Rotated into a preferred position before locking

The baseplate is not included with this product and must be purchased separately if required.

40mm coupling size

The 40mm measurement refers to the mechanical coupling between the pouch and Assura® baseplate.

It does not mean that the stoma itself measures 40mm.

Reference 2794 must be paired with a compatible 40mm Assura® baseplate.

The actual stoma opening is determined by the baseplate selected.

For example, a 40mm Assura® baseplate may accommodate a range of smaller stoma diameters within the coupling ring.

Always match:

• 40mm pouch coupling

• With a 40mm Assura® baseplate coupling

A 40mm pouch cannot be securely connected to a 50mm or 60mm Assura® baseplate.

Mechanical coupling

Assura® uses a mechanical coupling system to connect the pouch and baseplate.

The pouch is positioned over the coupling ring and locked into place.

An audible click provides confirmation that the pouch has been securely attached.

Before locking, the pouch can be rotated into the preferred position without removing it from the baseplate.

This allows the outlet to be positioned conveniently for:

• Standing

• Sitting

• Lying down

• Emptying the pouch

• Individual clothing requirements

After attaching the pouch, check around the complete circumference of the coupling to ensure it is fully engaged.

Maxi pouch

Reference 2794 is the Maxi version of the Assura® drainable pouch.

The larger pouch capacity is particularly useful for ileostomy because ileostomy output can be relatively frequent and liquid.

A Maxi pouch provides additional collection capacity while still allowing the contents to be emptied as often as necessary.

The pouch should nevertheless be emptied before becoming excessively full or heavy.

Regular emptying helps:

• Reduce weight pulling on the baseplate

• Reduce pressure on the mechanical coupling

• Improve comfort

• Maintain a flatter pouch profile

• Reduce the risk of leakage associated with excessive pouch weight

Drainable ileostomy pouch

Assura® 2794 is a drainable/open pouch.

This makes it particularly suitable for ileostomy output, which is generally more liquid or semi-liquid than typical colostomy output.

Instead of replacing the pouch every time it fills, the drainage outlet can be opened and the contents emptied into a toilet or appropriate receptacle.

The pouch can then be closed and continued in use according to the manufacturer's instructions and the individual's normal stoma-care routine.

Self-adhesive closing clip

The drainable outlet is secured using Coloplast's self-adhesive soft closing clip.

The soft clip provides a closure system designed to be:

• Secure

• Simple to operate

• Straightforward to clean

• Comfortable against the body

After emptying:

• Clean the end of the outlet as required

• Fold the outlet correctly

• Secure it using the closing clip

• Check that the closure is fully secure before repositioning clothing

This traditional Assura® closure should not be confused with the newer Hide-Away outlet used on some later Coloplast pouch systems.

Clear pouch

Reference 2794 is the Clear version.

The transparent pouch provides visibility of:

• The stoma

• Stoma output

• Output consistency

• Pouch contents

• Appliance positioning

This may be particularly useful:

• Following surgery

• When monitoring the stoma

• When assessing changes in output

• Where a carer assists with stoma management

• Where the user simply prefers a transparent pouch

Users who prefer the contents to be concealed may prefer the corresponding opaque Assura® Maxi drainable pouch.

Soft body-facing backing

The side of the pouch that sits against the body incorporates a soft backing material.

This provides a softer interface between the pouch and the skin than exposed pouch film.

The material is designed to:

• Improve comfort against the body

• Allow the skin to breathe

• Reduce pouch noise during movement

• Dry quickly following showering or swimming

• Improve everyday discretion

Because reference 2794 is clear, the opposite side remains transparent to allow visibility of the contents.

Odour-proof film

The pouch is manufactured from odour-proof film.

This helps contain odour from the stoma output while the pouch remains correctly closed and intact.

The pouch should be replaced if it becomes damaged or if the material or closure no longer provides an effective seal.

Choosing the correct baseplate

Reference 2794 is the pouch only.

A compatible 40mm Assura® baseplate must be selected separately.

Baseplate selection depends on:

• Stoma diameter

• Stoma shape

• Peristomal skin condition

• Abdominal contours

• Required cut-to-fit or pre-cut opening

• Whether standard or extended-wear adhesive is appropriate

• Whether a flat or convex solution is required

The opening in the baseplate should fit closely around the stoma without touching or constricting it.

This is particularly important with ileostomy output because prolonged contact between output and exposed peristomal skin can cause significant irritation.

40mm Assura® baseplates

The 40mm coupling size is designed to work with compatible 40mm Assura® baseplates.

The baseplate coupling size and actual stoma opening are separate measurements.

A baseplate may therefore have:

• 40mm external coupling

• A smaller opening around the stoma

Always select the baseplate according to both:

1. The required 40mm coupling

2. The actual measured stoma size

Flat or convex baseplate?

The pouch itself does not provide convexity.

Whether the complete appliance is flat or convex depends on the baseplate selected.

A flat baseplate may be suitable where the stoma protrudes adequately and the surrounding abdominal surface provides a reliable sealing area.

Convexity may be considered where the stoma is:

• Flush with the skin

• Retracted

• Situated within a dip

• Located within folds or uneven contours

• Associated with recurrent leakage using a flat appliance

Convex products should be selected following appropriate stoma assessment, particularly where convexity has not previously been used.

Attaching the pouch:

Ensure that a compatible 40mm Assura® baseplate has been correctly applied around the stoma.

Check that the baseplate coupling ring is clean.

Position the pouch over the mechanical coupling.

Rotate the pouch into the preferred position before locking if required.

Secure the pouch according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Listen for the audible click confirming secure locking.

Check around the complete coupling to make sure it is fully engaged.

Gently check that the pouch is securely attached before repositioning clothing.

Emptying the pouch:

Empty the pouch before it becomes excessively full or heavy.

Position yourself appropriately over a toilet or suitable receptacle.

Release the self-adhesive closing clip.

Open the drainable outlet.

Direct the outlet into the toilet.

Allow the pouch contents to drain.

Clean the end of the outlet as required.

Refold the outlet correctly.

Secure it using the closing clip.

Check that the outlet is fully closed before repositioning clothing.

Changing the pouch:

The pouch can be removed from the baseplate without removing the adhesive baseplate from the skin.

Wash and dry your hands.

Release the mechanical coupling according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Carefully separate the pouch from the baseplate.

Dispose of the used pouch appropriately.

Inspect the existing baseplate for:

• Leakage

• Lifting

• Output beneath the adhesive

• Damage

• Deterioration of the seal

If the baseplate remains secure and appropriate to continue wearing, attach a new compatible 40mm Assura® pouch.

If leakage or adhesive failure is evident, replace the baseplate as well.

Changing the baseplate:

Change the baseplate according to the manufacturer's instructions and the individual's normal stoma-care routine.

Replace it sooner if:

• Leakage occurs

• Adhesive begins lifting

• Ileostomy output reaches beneath the barrier

• Peristomal skin becomes sore

• The baseplate becomes damaged

• The appliance no longer feels secure

Persistent leakage should prompt reassessment of the baseplate opening and appliance fit rather than simply more frequent pouch changes.

• Significant changes in stoma colour, severe abdominal pain, marked swelling, persistent vomiting or unexpected cessation of ileostomy output accompanied by symptoms of obstruction require appropriate clinical assessment
