Coloplast Assura® 2816 is a two-piece closed colostomy pouch with a Maxi pouch size, opaque covering and 60mm mechanical coupling, designed primarily for people with a colostomy producing formed or relatively predictable output.

The pouch connects to a separate compatible 60mm Assura® baseplate, allowing the adhesive baseplate to remain attached around the stoma while the pouch can be removed and replaced independently.

The Assura® mechanical coupling provides a secure connection between the pouch and baseplate. An audible click helps confirm that the pouch has been correctly locked into position, and the pouch can be rotated into the preferred position before locking.

The Maxi pouch provides increased collection capacity, while the opaque covering conceals the pouch contents for greater discretion.

Two-piece system

Assura® 2816 forms part of a two-piece ostomy system.

The complete appliance consists of:

• A separate adhesive baseplate

• A removable closed pouch

The baseplate adheres to the skin around the stoma while the pouch connects mechanically to the baseplate.

Unlike a one-piece appliance, the pouch can therefore be removed and replaced while the adhesive baseplate remains attached, provided the baseplate continues to provide a secure seal.

This can be useful where:

• Closed pouches are changed more frequently than the baseplate

• Repeated adhesive removal is undesirable

• The user prefers a modular pouch and baseplate system

• Different compatible pouches are used with the same baseplate

The baseplate is not included and must be purchased separately if required.

60mm coupling size

The 60mm measurement refers to the mechanical coupling between the pouch and Assura® baseplate.

It does not mean that the stoma itself measures 60mm.

Reference 2816 must be paired with a compatible 60mm Assura® baseplate.

The actual opening around the stoma is determined separately by the selected baseplate.

A 60mm coupling baseplate may therefore have a smaller pre-cut or cut-to-fit opening within the coupling ring.

Always match:

• With a 60mm Assura® baseplate coupling

A 60mm pouch cannot be securely connected to a 40mm or 50mm Assura® baseplate.

Mechanical coupling

Assura® uses a mechanical coupling system to connect the pouch securely to the baseplate.

The pouch is positioned over the coupling ring and locked into place.

An audible click confirms that the pouch has been securely attached.

Before locking, the pouch can be rotated into the preferred position without removing it from the baseplate.

This allows the pouch to be positioned according to:

• Standing position

• Sitting position

• Sleeping position

• Clothing

• Individual preference

After attaching the pouch, check around the complete circumference of the coupling to ensure it is fully engaged.

Maxi pouch size

Reference 2816 is the Maxi version of the Assura® closed pouch.

The larger pouch capacity may be useful for users who:

• Produce a greater volume of colostomy output

• Prefer additional collection capacity

• Require more capacity than a Mini or Midi pouch

• Want to reduce the frequency of pouch changes where appropriate

The pouch should still be replaced before it becomes excessively full or heavy.

Excessive pouch weight can:

• Pull on the baseplate

• Place additional pressure on the coupling

• Reduce discretion

• Reduce comfort

• Increase the risk of accidental detachment

Closed pouch

Assura® 2816 is a closed pouch.

It does not have a drainage outlet.

When the pouch requires changing, it is removed from the baseplate and replaced with a new pouch rather than being emptied.

Closed pouches are generally most suitable where stoma output is:

• Formed

• Semi-formed

• Relatively predictable

• Produced at manageable intervals

They are therefore most commonly used for colostomy.

For frequent liquid or semi-liquid output, a drainable pouch will generally be more practical.

Opaque pouch

Reference 2816 is the Opaque version.

The opaque covering conceals the stoma output and pouch contents during normal wear.

This can provide:

• Greater discretion beneath clothing

• Less visible pouch contents

• A softer appearance than a transparent pouch

• Greater confidence for users who prefer concealed output

For users who prefer visibility of the stoma and pouch contents, the corresponding Maxi Clear 60mm pouch is Ref 2786.

Integrated filter

The pouch incorporates an integrated filter.

Gas naturally produced by the bowel can accumulate inside a closed colostomy pouch and cause the pouch to inflate or balloon.

The filter helps:

• Allow gas to escape gradually

• Reduce pouch ballooning

• Help control odour

• Maintain a flatter pouch profile

• Improve discretion during wear

Do not puncture, cut or modify the filter.

Choosing the correct baseplate

Reference 2816 is the pouch only.

A compatible 60mm Assura® baseplate must be selected separately.

Baseplate selection depends on:

• Stoma diameter

• Stoma shape

• Peristomal skin condition

• Abdominal contours

• Whether a pre-cut or cut-to-fit opening is required

• Whether flat or convex support is appropriate

The opening in the baseplate should fit closely around the stoma without rubbing against or constricting it.

An opening that is too large may expose surrounding skin to stoma output and increase the risk of leakage or irritation.

An opening that is too small can rub against or constrict the stoma.

Flat or convex baseplate?

The pouch itself does not determine whether the complete appliance is flat or convex.

This depends on the compatible Assura® baseplate selected.

A flat baseplate may be suitable where the stoma protrudes adequately and the surrounding abdominal surface provides a reliable sealing area.

Convexity may be considered where the stoma is:

• Flush with the skin

• Retracted

• Situated within a dip

• Located within folds or uneven abdominal contours

• Associated with recurrent leakage when using a flat appliance

Convexity should be selected following appropriate stoma assessment.

Attaching the pouch:

Ensure the compatible 60mm Assura® baseplate has been correctly applied.

Check that the coupling ring is clean and unobstructed.

Position the pouch over the baseplate coupling.

Rotate the pouch into the preferred position if required.

Secure the pouch according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Listen for the audible click confirming secure locking.

Check around the complete circumference of the coupling.

Gently confirm that the pouch is securely attached before repositioning clothing.

Changing the pouch:

Because this is a closed pouch, it is replaced rather than emptied.

Wash and dry your hands.

Release the mechanical coupling according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Carefully remove the used pouch from the baseplate.

Dispose of the used pouch appropriately.

Inspect the existing baseplate for:

• Leakage

• Lifting

• Output beneath the adhesive

• Damage

• Deterioration of the seal

If the baseplate remains secure and appropriate to continue wearing, attach a new compatible 60mm Assura® pouch.

If leakage or adhesive failure is present, replace the baseplate as well.

Changing the baseplate:

Replace the Assura® baseplate according to the manufacturer's instructions and the individual's established stoma-care routine.

Change the baseplate sooner if:

• Leakage occurs

• The adhesive begins lifting

• Stoma output reaches beneath the barrier

• Peristomal skin becomes sore

• The baseplate becomes damaged

• The appliance no longer feels secure

Persistent leakage should prompt reassessment of the baseplate opening and overall appliance fit rather than simply more frequent pouch changes.
