How it works:
A healthy vagina is naturally acidic and is normally dominated by beneficial lactobacilli.
Bacterial Vaginosis can occur when the normal balance of vaginal bacteria changes and the vaginal pH rises above its usual acidic range. This can lead to symptoms including:
- Thin or watery vaginal discharge
- Grey or white discharge
- Strong or fishy odour
- Vaginal discomfort
Balance Activ BV Treatment Gel contains lactic acid, which helps restore the vagina's normal acidic pH.
It also contains glycogen, which provides nutrients that support the growth of beneficial lactobacilli and helps restore the normal vaginal flora.
The formulation has a pH of approximately 3.8.
Ingredients:
- Purified water
- Propylene glycol
- Lactic acid
- Methylhydroxypropyl cellulose
- Sodium lactate
- Glycogen
pH: approximately 3.8
Contains no preservatives.
Hormone free.
Allergy information:
The glycogen used in Balance Activ BV Treatment Gel is derived from shellfish (oysters).
Do not use if you have a known allergy or sensitivity to any of the ingredients.
If you have a shellfish allergy, seek advice from a pharmacist, doctor or other healthcare professional before using the product.
How to use:
For treatment of Bacterial Vaginosis:
- Use 1 × 5ml tube once daily for 7 consecutive days
- Use preferably at bedtime
Application instructions:
- Wash your hands before use.
- Twist off the end tab of one single-use tube.
- Sit or lie in a comfortable position.
- Gently insert the neck of the applicator into the vagina as far as is comfortable.
- Gently squeeze the tube to release the contents.
- Remove the applicator while continuing to squeeze the tube.
- Dispose of the applicator after use.
- Wash your hands.
Each applicator is intended for single use only.
Some leakage may occur after application. Using the gel at bedtime reduces leakage, and a panty liner may be useful.
Leakage does not necessarily mean that the treatment has been ineffective.
For treatment of BV:
Use:
- 1 tube daily
- For 7 consecutive days
Complete the full treatment course.
For recurrent BV / maintaining vaginal pH:
Balance Activ BV Treatment Gel may also be used to help maintain normal vaginal pH and flora where symptoms tend to recur.
The manufacturer advises that it may be used:
- After menstruation
- Following antibiotic treatment
- After other recognised BV triggers
For ongoing support, the manufacturer currently suggests 1–2 tubes per week where appropriate.
Follow the instructions supplied with the product or advice from a healthcare professional.
Use during menstruation:
Avoid using Balance Activ BV Treatment Gel during your period, as menstrual flow may reduce the effectiveness of the gel.
If possible, wait until menstruation has finished before starting or continuing a treatment course.
Important information:
Balance Activ BV Treatment Gel is for vaginal use only.
It is intended for adults and is not intended for use by or on children.
Do not use:
- If you are allergic to any of the ingredients
- If the applicator tube is damaged or broken
- After the expiry date
- If you are trying to conceive
Because the gel has a low pH, it can make the vaginal environment less favourable to sperm.
Balance Activ BV Treatment Gel is not a contraceptive.
It does not protect against:
- Pregnancy
- Sexually transmitted infections
Pregnancy:
Balance Activ BV Treatment Gel is considered suitable for use during pregnancy.
However, if you are pregnant and think you have a vaginal infection, consult your doctor or midwife before treatment so that the cause of the symptoms can be properly assessed.
Trying to conceive:
Avoid using Balance Activ BV Treatment Gel when trying to conceive because its acidic pH may reduce sperm survival.
BV versus thrush:
Balance Activ BV Treatment Gel is intended for Bacterial Vaginosis and is not a treatment for vaginal thrush.
Typical BV symptoms include:
- Fishy or unpleasant vaginal odour
- Thin, watery, grey or white discharge
- Vaginal discomfort
Thrush is more commonly associated with:
- Significant itching or soreness
- Thick, white discharge
- Usually little or no strong odour
If you are unsure whether your symptoms are due to BV, thrush or another condition, seek advice from a pharmacist, GP or sexual health professional.
