Fenbid 5% Gel – Ibuprofen 5% Topical Pain Relief – 50g

Fenbid 5% Gel is a topical anti-inflammatory and pain-relief medicine containing ibuprofen 5% w/w, used for the relief of pain and inflammation associated with muscular and soft-tissue conditions.

It is applied directly to the affected area and can be used for conditions including backache, rheumatic and muscular pain, sprains, strains and sports injuries.

Each gram of Fenbid Gel contains 50mg of ibuprofen, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that helps reduce pain and inflammation in the tissues beneath the skin.

What is Fenbid 5% Gel used for?

Fenbid Gel is licensed as a topical analgesic and anti-inflammatory medicine for:

• Backache

• Rheumatic pain

• Muscular aches and pains

• Sprains

• Strains

• Sports injuries

Ibuprofen belongs to a group of medicines known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

It works by reducing the production of substances involved in:

• Pain

• Inflammation

• Swelling

Because the medicine is applied directly to the skin over the affected area, it provides localised treatment without needing to take ibuprofen by mouth.

Ibuprofen 5% strength

Fenbid contains:

5% w/w ibuprofen

This is equivalent to:

50mg of ibuprofen in every 1g of gel

Fenbid 5% Gel should not be confused with Ibuprofen 10% Gel, which contains twice the concentration of ibuprofen.

Directions for use

For:

• Adults

• Elderly people

• Children over 12 years

Squeeze approximately 4–10cm of gel from the tube onto the affected area.

Gently rub the gel into the skin until absorbed.

Repeat when required, but:

• Leave at least 4 hours between applications

• Do not apply more than 4 times in any 24-hour period

Wash your hands after applying the gel unless your hands are the area being treated.

Do not use more gel than directed.

How long can Fenbid Gel be used?

Treatment should be reviewed if symptoms have not improved.

If symptoms:

• Persist for approximately 2 weeks

• Become worse

• Repeatedly return

A persistent or worsening injury may require further assessment rather than continued self-treatment.

For external use only

Fenbid Gel is intended only for application to the skin.

Do not:

• Swallow the gel

• Apply it inside the mouth

• Apply it inside the nose

• Apply it to or near the eyes

• Apply it to genital areas

• Apply it to broken or damaged skin

If the gel accidentally comes into contact with the eyes or other sensitive areas, rinse thoroughly with clean water.

Do not apply to broken skin

Do not use Fenbid on:

• Open wounds

• Cuts

• Infected skin

• Eczema

• Severely irritated skin

• Broken or damaged skin

Apply only to intact skin.

Do not cover with airtight dressings

Do not cover the treated area with an occlusive or waterproof dressing unless advised by a healthcare professional.

Loose clothing may normally be worn once the gel has been absorbed.

Who should not use Fenbid Gel?

Do not use Fenbid if you:

• Are allergic to ibuprofen

• Are allergic to any of the other ingredients

• Have previously experienced an allergic reaction to aspirin

• Have reacted to another NSAID

• Have previously developed asthma, wheezing, rhinitis or hives after taking aspirin or another NSAID

• Are in the last 3 months of pregnancy

Do not use in children aged 12 years or under.

Speak to a pharmacist or doctor before use if:

• You have asthma

• You have kidney problems

• You have a history of stomach or duodenal ulcers

• You regularly take other NSAID medicines

• You have previously experienced sensitivity to anti-inflammatory medicines

• You are pregnant or trying to become pregnant

• You are breastfeeding

• You have another significant medical condition

Using other painkillers

Even though Fenbid is applied to the skin, it still contains ibuprofen, which is an NSAID.

Speak to a pharmacist or doctor before using Fenbid if you regularly take:

• Ibuprofen tablets or capsules

• Naproxen

• Diclofenac

• Aspirin

• Other NSAIDs

• Regular prescription anti-inflammatory medicines

Using several NSAIDs together may increase the risk of side effects.

Pregnancy

Do not use Fenbid Gel during the final 3 months of pregnancy.

During the first 6 months of pregnancy, ibuprofen should only be used when necessary and following appropriate healthcare advice.

If you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant or are trying to conceive, speak to a pharmacist or doctor before use.

Breastfeeding

If you are breastfeeding, speak to a pharmacist or doctor before using Fenbid Gel.

Use the smallest amount for the shortest period necessary if advised that treatment is appropriate.

Do not apply the gel directly to the breast area.

Possible side effects

Like all medicines, Fenbid Gel can cause side effects, although not everybody experiences them.

Possible local reactions include:

• Redness

• Itching

• Burning

• Rash

• Skin irritation

Stop using the gel if significant irritation develops.

Allergic reactions

Stop using Fenbid and seek urgent medical attention if you develop:

• Difficulty breathing

• Wheezing

• Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat

• Severe rash

• Hives

• Collapse or severe dizziness

People with a history of reactions to aspirin or other NSAIDs may be at greater risk.

Benzyl alcohol

Fenbid Gel contains benzyl alcohol.

Benzyl alcohol may cause mild local irritation in some people.

The gel also contains isopropyl alcohol.

Storage

• Keep out of the sight and reach of children

• Keep the tube securely closed

• Store according to the instructions printed on the packaging

• Do not use after the expiry date shown on the tube or carton
