How to apply CeraPlus Barrier Extenders

Always follow Hollister's Instructions for Use.

In general:

1. Remove the existing pouching system.

2. Clean the skin around the stoma according to the usual stoma-care routine.

3. Ensure the skin is clean and completely dry.

4. Apply the new ostomy skin barrier or pouching system first.

5. Take one CeraPlus Barrier Extender.

6. Lightly stretch the extender at each end to help release the paper backing.

7. Remove one side of the paper backing.

8. Position the adhesive end along the perimeter of the skin barrier.

9. The extender should overlap both:

   • The existing ostomy barrier

   • The adjacent surrounding skin

10. Remove the remaining backing.

11. Smooth the extender into place using your fingers.

12. Apply additional extenders where required.

For complete reinforcement, three pieces can be arranged around the entire barrier.

Apply to clean, dry skin

Correct skin preparation is important for adhesion.

The manufacturer advises applying the product to:

• Clean skin

• Dry skin

• Intact skin

Avoid applying oils or lotions before use because these may reduce adhesion.

If a skin-care product is required, ensure it is compatible with the ostomy pouching system.

Removing the extenders

Not a barrier ring

Barrier rings are generally placed underneath the ostomy skin barrier close to the stoma to improve the seal or fill uneven contours.

Barrier Extenders are positioned around the outside edge of the skin barrier to reinforce and extend the adhesive perimeter.

The two products therefore perform different functions.

Not intended to correct active leakage

Barrier extenders can help prevent outer-edge lifting, but they should not be used simply to cover an appliance that is already leaking.

If stoma output has travelled underneath the main skin barrier:

• Remove the pouching system

• Clean and assess the skin

• Identify the cause of the leak

• Apply a fresh appropriately fitted appliance

Repeated leakage may indicate that the stoma opening, barrier profile or pouching system requires reassessment.
