Smith & Nephew IODOSORB™ Cadexomer Iodine 0.9% Ointment & Powder – Multiple Sizes

IODOSORB™ is an antimicrobial cadexomer iodine wound treatment designed for the management of exuding chronic wounds where slough, debris, excess exudate and increased bacterial burden may be delaying wound healing.

IODOSORB combines highly absorbent cadexomer microbeads with 0.9% elemental iodine. As the dressing absorbs wound fluid, the beads swell and gradually release iodine, providing sustained antimicrobial activity while helping remove exudate, slough, debris and bacteria from the wound bed.

It is available in both Ointment and Powder formulations, allowing the product to be selected according to wound shape and clinical requirements.

How IODOSORB™ works:

IODOSORB contains microscopic cadexomer beads incorporating 0.9% elemental iodine.

When the product comes into contact with wound exudate, the beads:

1. Absorb wound fluid and swell

2. Draw slough, debris and bacteria into the dressing

3. Gradually release iodine into the wound environment

4. Provide sustained antimicrobial activity while the dressing remains active

This combination provides both exudate management and antimicrobial action rather than simply applying free iodine directly to the wound.

The product changes colour as iodine is released. The initial dark brown colour becomes progressively lighter as the iodine is depleted, providing a visual indication that the dressing may require changing.

Suitable for:

IODOSORB may be used in the management of chronic exuding wounds, particularly where bacterial burden, slough or biofilm is a concern, including:

• Venous leg ulcers

• Pressure ulcers / pressure injuries

• Diabetic foot ulcers

• Other chronic exuding wounds

• Sloughy wounds

• Wounds with increased bacterial burden

• Wounds where biofilm is suspected

• Wounds requiring simultaneous desloughing and antimicrobial management

Complex wounds, diabetic foot ulcers and clinically infected wounds should be assessed and managed by an appropriate healthcare professional.

IODOSORB™ Ointment

IODOSORB Ointment is supplied as a dark brown cadexomer iodine ointment.

The ointment is particularly useful where a smooth, conformable application is required and can be applied directly across the wound bed.

IODOSORB™ Powder

IODOSORB Powder contains the same cadexomer iodine technology in a dry powder formulation.

The powder can be useful for irregular wound beds or wounds where the powder can conform to the wound surface before absorbing exudate and forming a gel.

Available as:

• 3g sachets

• Box of 7 sachets

Directions:

IODOSORB should be used as part of an appropriate wound-management plan.

Clean the wound according to the local wound-care protocol and remove loose debris as appropriate.

Dry the surrounding skin carefully.

Apply IODOSORB Ointment or Powder directly to the wound according to the manufacturer's instructions and the wound-care plan.

Ensure that the product is in contact with the areas of the wound requiring treatment.

Cover with an appropriate secondary dressing capable of managing the expected level of exudate.

Replace the dressing when clinically required or when the characteristic brown colour has substantially faded, indicating that the iodine has been depleted.

At each dressing change:

• Remove the secondary dressing

• Remove residual IODOSORB

• Clean the wound

• Reassess the wound, exudate level and signs of infection

• Reapply fresh IODOSORB if continued antimicrobial treatment remains appropriate

Important information:

• Contains iodine

• For external wound-care use only

• Intended primarily for exuding wounds

• Do not use on dry wounds where there is insufficient moisture to activate the cadexomer iodine system

• Do not use in patients with a known sensitivity to iodine or any component of the product

• Iodine can be absorbed systemically, particularly when treating large wounds or during prolonged treatment

• Extra caution is required in people with thyroid disease or significant renal impairment

• Cadexomer iodine products are generally unsuitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless specifically advised by an appropriate healthcare professional

• Use in children should only be undertaken where specifically clinically indicated

• Antimicrobial wound treatments should be reviewed regularly and discontinued when they are no longer clinically required

• A wound showing spreading redness, increasing pain, swelling, purulent discharge, deterioration, fever or other signs of significant infection requires clinical assessment

• IODOSORB should not replace systemic antibiotic treatment when systemic antimicrobial treatment is clinically indicated
