OptiFlo S is a sterile 0.9% sodium chloride catheter maintenance solution designed for the mechanical rinsing of indwelling urinary catheters where flushing has been clinically recommended.

The isotonic saline solution can help remove small blood clots, mucus, debris and other mechanical obstructions from the catheter. Unlike the citric-acid OptiFlo G and OptiFlo R solutions, OptiFlo S does not dissolve catheter encrustation or crystalline deposits.

Key features:

  • Contains 0.9% sodium chloride (normal saline)

  • Designed for urinary catheter maintenance

  • Helps mechanically flush small blood clots, mucus and debris

  • Useful where catheter drainage is affected by appropriate mechanical debris

  • Not effective against catheter encrustation

  • Sterile and ready to use

  • Designed for gentle, controlled catheter irrigation

  • 100ml per container

  • Product code: CSS100

  • Box of 12 × 100ml

Suitable for:

  • Maintenance of an indwelling urinary catheter

  • Mechanical flushing of small blood clots

  • Removal of mucus and debris from the catheter

  • Catheter maintenance where 0.9% saline has been specifically recommended

  • Use according to an individual catheter-care programme or healthcare professional's instructions

OptiFlo S should not be used as an alternative to a citric-acid solution where catheter encrustation is the identified problem.

Within the OptiFlo range:

  • OptiFlo S – 0.9% saline: mechanical flushing of clots, mucus and debris

  • OptiFlo G – 3.23% citric acid (Suby G): management of catheter encrustation

  • OptiFlo R – 6% citric acid (Solution R): management of more severe crystalline encrustation

Directions:

Use only according to an established catheter-maintenance protocol or the instructions of an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.

Wash and dry hands thoroughly and maintain appropriate aseptic technique.

Check that the OptiFlo container and packaging are intact before use.

Connect the OptiFlo system to the urinary catheter according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Administer the solution gently and without excessive pressure.

Do not force saline into the catheter or bladder if resistance is encountered.

After completing the prescribed procedure, disconnect the OptiFlo system and reconnect the appropriate catheter valve or urine drainage bag.

Dispose of the used container after use.

Important information:

  • For urinary catheter maintenance

  • Use only when there is a clear clinical indication

  • Not effective for catheter encrustation

  • A completely blocked catheter generally requires clinical assessment and may require catheter replacement rather than irrigation

  • Do not use catheter maintenance solutions routinely to prevent catheter-associated urinary tract infection

  • Maintain appropriate aseptic technique

  • Single-use product

  • Never force solution against resistance

  • Stop and seek clinical advice if significant pain, resistance, unexpected bleeding or other concerning symptoms occur

  • Persistent or recurrent catheter blockage should be assessed to establish the underlying cause

  • Do not use if the packaging is damaged or if the solution appears abnormal

  • Follow the manufacturer's instructions and the individual's catheter-management plan

  • Store according to the manufacturer's instructions
