Paracetamol 125mg Suppositories are a rectal pain-relief and fever-reducing medicine for children, particularly useful when taking paracetamol by mouth is difficult or unsuitable, for example because of nausea or vomiting.

Each suppository contains 125mg of paracetamol, an analgesic and antipyretic medicine used to relieve mild to moderate pain and reduce high temperature (fever).

They may be used for childhood symptoms including:

• Headache

• Toothache

• Earache

• Teething pain

• Sore throat

• Aches and pains associated with colds and flu

• Fever

This product is administered rectally only and is supplied as a pack of 10 individually wrapped suppositories.

What are Paracetamol 125mg Suppositories used for?

Paracetamol is both an:

• Analgesic – relieves pain

• Antipyretic – reduces fever

Paracetamol 125mg Suppositories may be used to relieve mild to moderate pain and fever associated with conditions such as:

• Colds and influenza

• Headache

• Toothache

• Earache

• Teething

• Sore throat

• General aches and pains

The suppository formulation can be particularly useful when a child cannot easily take tablets, liquids or other oral forms of paracetamol.

Why use a suppository?

A suppository is inserted into the rectum, where the paracetamol is absorbed into the body.

This route may be useful where a child:

• Has difficulty swallowing medicine

• Refuses oral medicines

• Feels nauseous

• Is vomiting

• Cannot conveniently take an oral paracetamol preparation

Paracetamol taken rectally is still paracetamol, so it must be included when calculating the child's total paracetamol dose.

Do not give another medicine containing paracetamol at the same time unless specifically advised by an appropriate healthcare professional.

Directions for use

For rectal use only.

For the Phoenix Labs Paracetamol 125mg Suppositories:

Children aged 1–3 years:

• 1 suppository per dose

Children aged 4–6 years:

• 2 suppositories per dose

Doses may be repeated if required:

• Leave at least 4 hours between doses

• Do not give more than 4 doses in 24 hours

Dosage should take account of the child's weight, and the manufacturer's leaflet should always be followed.

Do not use for more than 3 days unless advised by a doctor.

Important: use whole suppositories

Only whole suppositories should be administered.

Do not break or divide a suppository to obtain a smaller dose.

If the required dose cannot be provided using a whole 125mg suppository, seek advice from a pharmacist or doctor about a more appropriate paracetamol strength or formulation.

How to use a suppository

1. Wash your hands before use.

2. Remove one suppository from its individual wrapper immediately before administration.

3. If possible, the child should empty their bowels before the suppository is inserted.

4. Gently insert the suppository into the rectum.

5. Wash your hands afterwards.

Use only as directed in the Patient Information Leaflet.

Do not give with other medicines containing paracetamol

This is particularly important.

Many children's medicines contain paracetamol, including some:

• Pain-relief liquids

• Fever medicines

• Cold and flu products

• Prescription medicines

Do not give anything else containing paracetamol while using these suppositories.

Giving more than the recommended amount of paracetamol can cause serious liver damage, even if the child initially appears well.

If too much paracetamol is given

Seek immediate medical advice in the event of an overdose, even if the child appears well.

Paracetamol overdose can cause delayed and serious liver damage, and early treatment is important.

Do not wait for symptoms to develop.

Do not use if:

• The child is allergic to paracetamol

• The child is allergic to any of the other ingredients

• Another paracetamol-containing medicine is already being given and the combined dose would exceed the recommended amount

Speak to a pharmacist or doctor before use if:

• The child has liver problems

• The child has kidney problems

• You are unsure of the correct dose

• The child is unusually small or underweight for their age

• The child is taking other medicines

• The child requires paracetamol for longer than 3 days

Possible side effects

Like all medicines, paracetamol can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

Stop using the medicine and seek medical advice if the child develops signs of an allergic reaction such as:

• Difficulty breathing

• Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat

• Severe rash

• Hives

Rectal administration can also occasionally cause local irritation or redness around the rectal area.

Very rare serious skin reactions have been reported with paracetamol.

Storage

• Store below 25°C

• Keep out of the sight and reach of children

• Keep suppositories in their original packaging

• Remove from the individual wrapper only immediately before use

• Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging
