  • Fluid collection canister for Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT)
  • Designed specifically for the RENASYS TOUCH therapy system
  • Available in 300ml and 800ml sizes
  • Contains a solidifier / gelling agent
  • Collects wound exudate removed during therapy
  • Permanently sealed canister design
  • Includes integrated canister tubing
  • Includes an overflow protection system
  • Hydrophobic filtration helps protect the therapy pump from fluid ingress
  • Volume markings allow monitoring of collected exudate
  • Quick connection to the RENASYS TOUCH pump
  • Single use
  • Non-sterile
  • Medical device
  • For use by or under the supervision of appropriately trained healthcare professionals

Capacity: 300ml

Contains:

  • Sealed 300ml collection canister
  • Solidifying agent
  • Overflow guard
  • Silicone tubing
  • Integrated canister tubing

Smith+Nephew product code: 66801273

RENASYS TOUCH 800ml Canister with Solidifier

The larger canister provides additional capacity for wounds producing greater volumes of exudate.

Capacity: 800ml

Contains:

  • Sealed 800ml collection canister
  • Solidifying agent
  • Overflow guard
  • Silicone tubing
  • Integrated canister tubing

Smith+Nephew product code: 66801274

NHS code: ELZ719

BNF code: 20032200024

Pack size: 1 canister

How it works:

The RENASYS TOUCH pump creates controlled negative pressure at the wound dressing.

Wound exudate is drawn through the dressing and tubing into the RENASYS TOUCH canister.

The canister:

  • Collects the removed fluid
  • Helps isolate wound exudate from the therapy device
  • Contains a solidifier that gels collected fluid
  • Incorporates filtration and overflow protection to help prevent fluid entering the pump

The canister is permanently sealed and is discarded after use.

How to install:

The canister should be installed by an appropriately trained healthcare professional or by a patient/carer who has received specific instruction in the use of the RENASYS TOUCH system.

In general:

  1. Release the canister tubing from its packaging.
  2. Ensure the orange clips on the RENASYS TOUCH device are open.
  3. Position the canister with the volume markings facing forwards.
  4. Align the canister with the pump inlet.
  5. Push the canister gently into position.
  6. Secure both orange retaining clips until they click into place.
  7. Connect the canister tubing to the dressing tubing using the appropriate connector.
  8. Check that all connections are secure before starting therapy.

Always follow the RENASYS TOUCH User Manual or the instructions provided by the treating healthcare professional.

Canister position during therapy:

The RENASYS TOUCH device and canister should normally remain in an upright position during therapy.

Keeping the canister upright helps:

  • Maximise usable canister capacity
  • Maintain correct filtration
  • Support accurate alarm function
  • Reduce the risk of premature filter occlusion

Do not routinely operate the device upside down or face down.

When to change the canister:

The RENASYS TOUCH canister should be changed:

  • At least once every 7 days
  • Whenever the canister becomes visually full
  • Whenever the maximum volume indication is reached
  • When changing to a different patient
  • Earlier if clinically required
  • More frequently where wound exudate levels are high

Do not wait for the canister-overcapacity alarm before replacing a visibly full canister.

Each canister is single use only.

Do not empty and reuse the canister.

Changing the canister:

When replacing a canister:

  1. Pause therapy or switch the RENASYS TOUCH device off.
  2. Keep the tubing connectors above the wound where possible to reduce leakage.
  3. Disconnect the canister tubing from the dressing tubing.
  4. Close the tethered connector caps to prevent leakage.
  5. Release the retaining clips on both sides of the device.
  6. Carefully remove the used canister.
  7. Fit the new canister.
  8. Reconnect the therapy tubing.
  9. Restart therapy.
  10. Confirm that the prescribed negative pressure is restored and the dressing is functioning correctly.

Dispose of the used canister according to local clinical-waste procedures.

Choosing the correct canister size:

Smith+Nephew recommends using the smallest canister capacity appropriate for the expected volume of wound exudate.

The 300ml canister is generally preferred where adequate for the expected drainage volume.

The 800ml canister should not be used in patients considered at high risk of bleeding.

Using a smaller canister in patients at bleeding risk may allow changes in the volume or appearance of collected fluid to be recognised more quickly.

Important information:

RENASYS TOUCH Canisters are accessories to the RENASYS TOUCH NPWT system.

They do not provide negative pressure therapy when used independently.

The canister must be used with:

  • A compatible RENASYS TOUCH pump
  • An appropriate RENASYS wound dressing
  • Appropriate connecting tubing and accessories

RENASYS TOUCH canisters are not compatible with the RENASYS GO system.

Do not:

  • Reuse a used canister
  • Empty a canister for reuse
  • Modify the canister
  • Use a damaged or cracked canister
  • Use if the tubing or connectors are damaged
  • Connect incompatible NPWT equipment
  • Allow the canister to exceed its maximum capacity

Bleeding warning:

Bleeding is a potentially serious complication of Negative Pressure Wound Therapy.

Monitor the contents of the canister and tubing for signs of blood.

Particular caution is required in patients:

  • At increased risk of bleeding
  • Taking anticoagulant or antiplatelet medicines
  • With vascular grafts
  • With fragile blood vessels
  • Following recent surgery
  • Where haemostasis may not be secure

Do not use the 800ml canister in patients at high risk of bleeding.

If sudden or significant bleeding occurs, follow the patient's NPWT emergency plan and seek urgent medical attention.

Infection and exudate monitoring:

The quantity and appearance of wound exudate should be monitored throughout treatment.

Seek clinical review if there is:

  • A sudden increase in exudate
  • A significant change in exudate colour
  • Purulent drainage
  • Offensive odour
  • Increasing wound pain
  • Increasing redness or swelling
  • Fever
  • Evidence of significant bleeding

NPWT does not replace appropriate treatment of wound infection.

Single-use information:

RENASYS TOUCH Canisters are:

  • Single use
  • Non-sterile
  • Intended for use as part of one patient's NPWT treatment episode until replacement is required

Do not reprocess, re-use or transfer a used canister to another patient.
