Ring Pessary PVC

How it is used:
The correct size and type of pessary should be selected by a doctor, specialist nurse, pelvic health professional or other appropriately trained healthcare professional.
Correct sizing is important. A pessary that is too small may move or fall out, while one that is too large may cause discomfort, pressure or difficulty passing urine.
After fitting, the patient should be able to:
- Sit, stand and walk comfortably
- Pass urine normally
- Carry out normal daily activities without significant discomfort
The pessary should remain securely positioned without causing excessive pressure.
Some patients may be taught by their healthcare professional to remove, clean and reinsert their own ring pessary. Self-management should only be undertaken after appropriate assessment and training.
Cleaning and care:
If the patient has been advised to remove and clean the pessary:
- Wash using mild soap and water
- Rinse thoroughly with clean running water
- Allow to dry before reinsertion
- Inspect the pessary for cracks, damage, loss of shape or deterioration
Do not continue using a pessary that is:
- Cracked
- Split or damaged
- Discoloured
- Misshapen
- No longer flexible
A new PVC ring pessary should normally be supplied at least every 6 months, or sooner if deterioration is identified.

- Infection
- Difficulty passing urine or stool
- Pessary displacement or expulsion
- Rarely, impaction or entrapment
Seek medical advice if there is:
- New or persistent vaginal bleeding
- Foul-smelling or unusual vaginal discharge
- Vaginal pain or significant discomfort
- Difficulty passing urine
- Difficulty opening the bowels
- Vaginal itching or irritation
- Repeated displacement or expulsion of the pessary
Replacement interval:
The manufacturer recommends replacing a PVC Ring Pessary every 6 months at the latest, even where there are no complications.
Replace sooner if there is any cracking, damage, loss of shape or loss of flexibility.
Storage:
Before use, keep the pessary:

- In a dry, dark place
- Away from direct sunlight
- Protected from damage
