Biatain Ibu Non-Adhesive Dressings

Biatain Ibu Non-Adhesive is a sterile, soft and highly absorbent polyurethane foam dressing containing ibuprofen, designed for the management of painful, exuding acute and chronic wounds.

The dressing combines effective exudate management with the local release of a low dose of ibuprofen into the wound bed. When the foam comes into contact with wound exudate, ibuprofen is released locally and may help reduce wound pain during wear and at dressing changes.

Unlike Biatain Ibu Soft-Hold, the Non-Adhesive version contains no adhesive wound-contact layer, making it particularly suitable where the surrounding skin is fragile or an adhesive dressing is undesirable.

How Biatain Ibu works:

Ibuprofen is distributed evenly throughout the polyurethane foam at a concentration of:

0.5mg/cm²

When wound exudate enters the dressing:

1. The foam absorbs and retains the wound fluid.
2. The 3D foam structure conforms to the wound bed.
3. Ibuprofen is released from the foam into the moist wound environment.
4. The release continues in response to exudate throughout the dressing wear time.
5. The locally released ibuprofen may help relieve pain caused by tissue damage.

For example, a 10cm × 12cm dressing contains approximately 60mg of ibuprofen within the foam matrix.

Suitable wound types include:

Biatain Ibu Non-Adhesive may be used for painful, exuding wounds including:

• Leg ulcers
• Pressure ulcers / pressure injuries
• Non-infected diabetic foot ulcers
• Second-degree burns
• Postoperative wounds
• Traumatic wounds
• Skin abrasions
• Donor sites

Donor sites are specifically included for the Non-Adhesive version; this is an important difference from Biatain Ibu Soft-Hold.

Suitable exudate level:

Biatain Ibu Non-Adhesive is suitable for:

• Low exudate
• Moderate exudate
• High exudate

The dressing's absorption capacity and change frequency should be matched to the individual wound.

How to use:

Biatain Ibu Non-Adhesive should be used according to the manufacturer's Instructions for Use and the patient's wound-management plan.

1. Assess and cleanse the wound according to the appropriate wound-care protocol.
2. Physiological saline or clean tap water may be used for cleansing.
3. Gently dry the surrounding skin.
4. Select a dressing large enough to cover the wound appropriately.
5. Apply the white foam side towards the wound.
6. Ensure good contact between the dressing and the wound bed.
7. Secure using an appropriate:
   • Retention bandage
   • Secondary dressing
   • Tape
   • Compression system where clinically indicated.
8. Monitor wound exudate, pain and dressing saturation.

Because the dressing is non-adhesive, it requires suitable secondary fixation.

Use under compression:

Biatain Ibu Non-Adhesive is suitable for use underneath compression bandaging where compression therapy has been clinically indicated.

For venous leg ulcers, treatment of the underlying venous disease remains an essential part of wound management.

Dressing changes:

Biatain Ibu Non-Adhesive may remain in place for up to:

7 days

depending on:

• Wound condition
• Exudate level
• Dressing saturation
• Pain
• Condition of the surrounding skin
• Clinical assessment

Change sooner if:

• The dressing becomes saturated
• Exudate reaches the dressing edge
• Leakage occurs
• The dressing becomes damaged or displaced
• The wound requires reassessment
• Infection or deterioration is suspected

The sustained release of ibuprofen has been demonstrated throughout a wear period of up to seven days.

Contraindications:

Do not use Biatain Ibu in patients with a known sensitivity to:

• Ibuprofen
• Any component of the dressing
• Aspirin
• Other related NSAID painkillers

Particular caution applies where previous aspirin or NSAID reactions have been associated with:

• Asthma
• Rhinitis
• Urticaria / hives

Do not use during pregnancy.

Children under 12 years: Do not use except on the advice of a doctor.

Important precautions:

Do not use Biatain Ibu with:

• Hydrogen peroxide
• Hypochlorite solutions

Compatibility with wound-cleansing products other than physiological saline or tap water has not been established.

The dressing must be removed before:

• X-ray examinations
• Radiotherapy
• Ultrasound treatment
• Diathermy
• Microwave treatment
• MRI scanning

Infected wounds, diabetic wounds and wounds caused wholly or partly by arterial insufficiency should be frequently assessed by a healthcare professional.

Infection:

Biatain Ibu Non-Adhesive is not an antimicrobial dressing.

The current indication specifically includes non-infected diabetic foot ulcers.

If infection is suspected, seek appropriate clinical assessment. Signs may include:

• Increasing redness
• Swelling
• Increasing pain
• Heat around the wound
• Purulent discharge
• Offensive odour
• Fever
• Rapid wound deterioration

Appropriate treatment of infection should not be delayed.

Important information:

Although Biatain Ibu contains ibuprofen, it is a medical device rather than a conventional ibuprofen medicinal product.

Its purpose is to combine moist wound healing and exudate management with local release of ibuprofen at the wound bed.

Do not:

• Reuse
• Re-sterilise
• Use if the sterile packaging is damaged
• Use after the expiry date
